1904496, Rush: Shuster was "mean and cruel" to Marsha Blackburn.
Posted by faygokid on Tue Sep-25-07 05:06 PM

Of course, ultimately to Rush it's all about . . .Rush. I am truly surprised he even mentioned the Marsha Blackburn interview, but he's of course more concerned about coverage of himself, and initiating the "Betray Us" name. (Titled, "David Shuster's Rush Obsession" on his website.) Anyway, here's Cyst Boy's "take" on it from today. (For those who don't like posts from there, some may be interested in knowing of his bizarre rant):

. . .RUSH: And now they're trying to say that I invented the name, and MoveOn.org was just copying me. Well, of course, I get everything started in this country -- ask Donovan McNabb -- but they're trying to say, "Hey! Hey! To hell with MoveOn.org! Limbaugh started it." They had a congressperson on last night, Marsha Blackburn, a Republican from Tennessee, and they ambushed her over the death of a soldier in Iraq, who they claim was from her district, that she didn't know about. It turns out he was not. I haven't had a chance to read this whole thing. I don't think the dead soldier was from her district. They accused her of not knowing the name and circumstances of an 18-year-old soldier that died from her district. She didn't know who it was and Shuster just really piled up. It was mean and cruel. It was everything liberals claim they're not. I don't know what's happened to David Shuster. He used to be okay when he was at Fox, but he's gotten over there, drinking the Kool-Aid at Mess-NBC. I guess trying to make a difference. They're trying real hard over there. Okay, so now, I -- your host, the Doctor of Democracy -- am responsible for the whole name "Betray Us" being in the public dialogue. . . http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_092507/content/01125109.guest.html

31. She said she was aware
but couldn't remember his name
Shuster replied with something like: you cant remember the name of a kid from your own district who died a month ago but you remember everything about the Move on ad down to the finest detail.
I think he was subtly getting at the idea that her whole existence was meant to do nothing
more than repeat GOP talking points verbatim.

something we see so rarely these days.

Perhaps Rush and the wingers would prefer Shuster act like they do. I'd be all for that, too.

10. doesn't matter
Jeremy Bohannan, 18, from Bon Aqua, Tn died on Aug 18. That is who Schuster said was the last killed from her district.

If Bon Aqua is not in her district, big deal. Then its someone else - but she didn't know, had no idea. Could not come up with a name if her life depended on it. That name nor any other.

11. I can't imagine they didn't fact-check that name before using it. I think Limbaugh is blowing smoke.
Look at the way he walks it back from 'it turns out he was not' to 'I don't THINK he was...' Plus he's all over the place with his criticism here, his main point being how 'mean' Shuster was. God, I don't know how anyone can listen to that man, I can't even read his words without getting ill.

24. Yep
It's her district. Bon Aqua is in Hickman county. It's close enough that she could have corrected Mr. Shuster if he were wrong. That is, if she took the time from her outrage over a newspaper add.

It was for me, a small "Have you no sense of Decency?" moment. When exactly are they going to stop lying and knock it off with the shiny object rhetoric? People are dying and they're going to keep dying and no amount of wedge issue bullshit is going the change that.

If it were across the line, if Ms. Blackburn cared to remember the names of the fallen in her disctrict, she would have corrected Mr. Shuster. Obviously she did not care and did not correct Mr. Shuster. She had other priorities.

http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/09/24/shuster-to-rep-blackburn-when-was-the-last-time-a-new-york-times-ad-ever-killed-somebody

Shuster: “Let’s talk about the public trust. You represent, of course, a district in western Tennessee. What was the name of the last solider from your district who was killed in Iraq?”

Blackburn:”The name of the last soldier killed in Iraq uh - from my district I - I do not know his name -”

Shuster: “Ok, his name was Jeremy Bohannon, he was killed August the 9th, 2007. How come you didn’t know the name?”

Blackburn: “I - I, you know, I - I do not know why I did not know the name…”

Shuster: “But you weren’t appreciative enough to know the name of this young man, he was 18 years old who was killed, and yet you can say chapter and verse about what’s going on with the New York Times and Move On.org.”

Shuster: “But don’t you understand, the problems that a lot of people would have, that you’re so focused on an ad — when was the last time a New York Times ad ever killed somebody? I mean, here we have a war that took the life of an 18 year old kid, Jeremy Bohannon from your district, and you didn’t even know his name.”

Please sign this petition/thank you letter to MSNBC and David Shuster. Thank you...

Thank you for having David Shuster hosting Tucker Carlson's show on Sept. 24, 2007. It was very refreshing to see his views and hear his commentary. It was also the great the way he interviewed Marsha Blackburn (R-Tn) and brought her to task over her lack of knowledge of the name of the last soldier from her district to be killed in Iraq, yet she was well versed on the republican talking points against the moveon.org ad in the New York Times.

I think you should seriously consider replacing Tucker Carlson with David Shuster full time. I know I would watch it every day. Tucker? Not so much.

Thank you again for an EXCELLENT show with David Shuster. I will be looking forward to seeing him again.

36. Shuster wrong, but that's besides the point
I did a little research on this. The parents were from McEwen, TN, not in Blackburn's district. It is possible that they moved from Bon Aqua and that's why their son considered it his home town. Bon Aqua is actually partially in Blackburn's district. It actually oddly is at the meeting point of three congressional districts. Probably should be on Blackburn's radar screen anyway if someone from that town is killed in the war.

In any case, why does Shuster need to know the answer? He's not the Congressman. If Blackburn gave an answer to the question and Shuster got it wrong, then it would have mattered. He should have simply kept silent when Blackburn didn't know the answer.

By the way, I'm in Blackburn's district. She's very irritating. Hates immigrants. Loves the war. Never, ever, admits to making a mistake.

as far as the military is concerned. Even if his parents moved the soldier's home of record is Bon Aqua, Tenn. Why do you assume the soldier was living with his parents?

But it is beside the point. Another soldier from Bon Aqua was killed. Sgt. Roger D. Rowe of Bon Aqua, Tenn. Blackburn clearly lets her staff worry about minor details like dead soldiers. She has to be immersed in vital stuff like MoveOn ads and NY Times discount rates and procedures.

28. That is right from the Rush playbook
When something is indefensible, just make something up and make and spout it as a definitive statement: "It turns out he was not." Then equivocate just enough to have a little wiggle room: "I haven't had a chance to read this whole thing." Then give an "opinion" which reinforces the lie: "I don't think the dead soldier was from her district." Easy as pie. Now when the little dittoheads take grief for their moran politician's performance they can all say in unison "It was a hit job, he wasn't even from her district!" And I'll be damned if it doesn't work.

33. You beat me to it...
...I came back to this thread to post something similar, how it's out of the standard Republic playbook these days: lie, obfuscate, confuse, throw sand in our eyes. It muddies the waters of political discourse, and ruins any chance at rational discourse. Which is just what they want, because rational discourse would inevitably lead us away from the policies these people espouse. The really frightening thing is how well it works.

38. Schuster apologizes for mistake on air
Link here- http://newsbusters.org/static/2007/08/2007-09-26MSNBCShuster.wmv

DAVID SHUSTER: On Monday evening while guest-hosting the 6 p.m. evening hour, I conducted an interview with Tennessee Republican Marsha Blackburn. The congresswoman spoke at length about a newspaper ad that criticized General Petraeus. In what I believed was an effort to examine Representative Blackburn's priorities, I then asked her to name the last soldier from her congressional district killed in Iraq.

She responded "the name of the last soldier killed in Iraq from my district, I do not know." After that response, I identified who I believed to be that fallen soldier, a Tennessean killed in Iraq last month. But according to Pentagon documents, that young man came from a town inside a neighboring congressional district, not from Representative Blackburn's, and for that, I apologize for that mistake.
