Say Bush is crazy enough to attack Iran
I'm just wondering how stretched out the military is already.

Can the mighty machine that is the American military take on another war? Will Bush destroy the military in the same way he has destroyed practically everything else in his presidency, not to mention his life?

1. Who needs the military when you've got mercs?
Drawdown on mercs in Iraq = available mercs for Iran.

5. Here is how stretched they are
Edited on Wed Sep-26-07 04:12 PM by Marrah_G
450 Navy reservists are on the ground in Iraq doing what was formerly an Army job. Those 450 replaced 450 other Navy reservists and will be replaced in November by 450 more.

6. Seems like there was an article a while back that stated
that even if the draft were enacted right now, it would take the military 2-3 years to get back to the correct numbers of troops. :(

7. YES...
It is that simple. When ideology trumps facts, there you have it

All I have to say is the best laid plans of mice and men...

And what you will see is the end of the American Empire

It is the cost to this failure that I fear

9. Mercs
because Bush has done little or nothing to keep the troops well supplied and well rested...they were never meant to be used beyond this point, I think.

10. I assume that's why it's theorized the U.S. would bomb Iran rather than use ground forces
I can see huge problems with that strategy, not the least of which being that we have more than 160k troops sitting right next door who would become targets.

Logistically it's a military nightmare, but then so was their plan for Iraq.

13. That is what is so terrifying
Our military are the ones that will pay heavily for the actions of a few egomaniacs. It wouldn't be the first time a leaders thoughtless grab for power decimated their own skilled fighting force.

12. Iran is a very large country. If we engage Iran in war, we lose.
It is impossible for us to "win" any war in Iraq and Afghanistan. The best we can hope for is to get out with minimal damage beyond that which we have already caused.

Any military strike on Iran would unleash WWIII. It might well lead to the destruction of the entire planet, not just the United States. At the very minimum, the United States as we know it would be destroyed.

Attacking Iran would be utter madness. Complete and utter madness.

15. The same ignorance
"Drop 50,000 troops tops into Baghdad" is the original mindset of the neocons. The images of Conquistadors and the brits doing it on the cheap with daring small superior forces. The seizure of Hungary by a platoon of SS suing traitors, terror and bluff.

The same thinking afflicts this scenario. First just use a few bombs. A-bombs to finally show them, oh boy! The last juvenile chickenhawk lust of the neocons fulfilled. Chaos, Just move in and take advantage of, say, namely the world panic about the oil fields.

Neat, sweet and all the initiative rests with the bringers of chaos and threat. Logistics, boots on ground, reaction by BOTH the world(threatened by US hands on the failing oil spigot) and iranian and Muslim response and internal US dissent. All that is written off, again.

We cower a bit thinking it might WORK rather than the crime and outrage and the unfailing failure of these goons in charge. We cower knowing it is not effectively or strongly opposed enough by anyone who should. Inevitability of beasts being beasts of power being exerted brutally, of a world that will not fight back...ahead of time.

It will incinerate the neocons and the US influence in the world, destroy the world economy and not work to certainly to destroy their nuclear program forever... the new WMD lie. The big lie. it will not overthrow their government...another lie. It will not be a viable control of their oil fields(hasn't worked in Iraq under "friendlier" circumstances. The insurgence will be globalized. The devil is in the small detail of sending in troops into the oil fields. Whatever the shock and awe that is what will devour the last capability of US ground forces in a useless, doomed endeavor...no matter what success appears at first bloom. Or else sitting back and expecting shock and awe to thrill the world will blow up in our faces. Unless you invade and occupy the world...uselessly... this madness will blow right back. The propaganda only strives to hide from the American people the full extent of the truth and coming horror and folly.

18. Tin and blonde dye aren't compatible and I try to avoid it, but is W trying to privatize
the military?

It's really a passing thought, but he seems intent on destroying the personnel infrastructure that exists.

I will not hold this thought, I only offer it up for discussion. My fervent hope is that it goes nowhere.
