September 26, 2007

Under the radar, quietly hidden behind his disastrous foreign policy failures and trillion-dollar bloody affair in Iraq, the U.S. economy under Bush’s fiscal “leadership” is a speeding train heading into a brick wall. So far the major news networks have only been reporting on this around the fringes, but that’s about to change as recession and perhaps full-blown depression are looming around the corner.

Alex S. Gabor, writing for The American Chronicle put it this way: “Bush's military adventurism, not to mention his administration's exorbitant tax cuts for the wealthy, gutted the surplus of $128 billion Clinton handed him in 2001 into a deficit of well over $1 trillion today. Bush has simultaneously increased the national debt by over $3 trillion effectively nailing each and every US citizen with a bill for almost $30,000. The foreign bankers know that its time to wean America off its free debt ride and that any further debt will never be repaid. The greatest (Ponzi) scheme in the history of mankind is rapidly, within the next decade, completely unwinding.”

Want more good news? The U.S. unemployment rate is climbing, as is the poverty rate, there’s almost no such thing as an American manufacturing job, the personal savings rate is at a negative number, big corporations continue to ship jobs overseas with no restrictions or oversight, mortgage companies are going bankrupt, and the home ownership rate is at its lowest point in two decades. Worse, increasing numbers of foreclosures are depressing home prices all over the U.S., adding to the buildup of unsold inventory and further harming the already damaged housing market.

Meanwhile, despite recent rate cuts by the Fed, the dollar has fallen to par with the Canadian dollar with no bottom in sight. The national debt is now beyond $10 trillion. Foreign bankers have been shifting from dollar denominated oil contracts into Euro denominated exchanges such as the one recently established in Iran, and gradually shifting out of the US Treasury market along with the Chinese who have already shifted billions out of dollar denominated assets.

US taxpayers have spent over $450 billion on Iraq alone, while Bush/Cheney cronies continue making a killing from military contracts. Bush says he’s plenty capable of “being wise about the money.” ‘Fraid not Chucklenutz. You're not equal to managing a lemonade stand, much less the (formerly) largest economy on the planet. You've never been wise about anything and managing the huge budget surpluses Clinton left in your greasy hands is no exception.

We’re in serious financial trouble, Truthseekers. We’ll talk about it tonight.

67. One of my last rewrites from a couple of yrs. ago, when I say a
headline in the BBC with angry Iraqi's pictured and the headline read "Yanks Go Home"

To the tune of Yankee Doodle - clearing throat -

Yankee Bush went to Iraq with no inhibition
Stuck the Poodle up his butt, and called it a coalition

Yankee Bushie, keep it, keep those missiles handy
GOPers in lockstep
Armageddon will be dandy!

Nothing as intensive as yours, and I'm a bit envious!

72. Ha ha!
Her head may be spinning so much from the spin she's expected to deliver that she really did get sick! I was on the phone today with a friend in GA, and he hasn't been able to listen to her for a while - he calls me to ask what she's been talking about since - and he asked if she was sick from carrying so much water for the dems from his experience when he could listen to her! He really likes her, but realizes that she sometimes tries to put lipstick on a pig for them dems.

The "leadership" (I used quotes because I haven't actually seen much leadership) needs to put pressure on the blue dogs and the rest of the turncoats to fall in line because they make the rest of the party look awful.

Hoping that you're doing well! :hi:

Complicity comes to my mind, and it won't help them in '08. The 'reformed' repugs that I come into contact with are sick of the concept of "playing politics", and supported the dems, who they now view as "playing politics" as opposed to doing the correct thing(s).

Hell, the only argument that I have left, besides the repukes being obstructionists, which they they are, is pointing out the half-assed democrats, and I don't have a problem identifying them as such anymore!

116. Heh, when I was pregnant with child *1 I went in to have my
vision checked, even though I had read that it's common for vision to change during pregnancy, but I thought that I was going blind! I was berated by the techs who stated, 'my vision doesn't correct to 20/25 with glasses/lenses'. Glossy paper is a killer, and I'm so glad that The Nation hits my mailbox on recycled, flat paper as I can read it much better!

Distance vision is fine, it's the close up, small print on glossy paper that is giving me a fit! :hi:

I took a week's vacation to go to the DC protest, and on returning to work they called me in and told me my position was eliminated. Cute, huh? The gratifying thing has been the genuine concern and outrage of my fellow staff. They've been calling and emailing for 2 solid days with messages of concern and support. I must've done something right!

Job-hunting has changed a lot since the LAST CENTURY, when I was in the market!:eyes:

Had it been my previous employer, a major airline, it would have gone with the territory. They were always cutting staff, but you had recall rights and usually an option for transfer (how I ended up in Texas and New York!) or part-time. This time, it's personal. I'm majorly pissed.

But I have you guys to vent with!:grouphug:

119. tnlefty, you can ask me anything - you know that!
Over 12 years I've survived numerous staff reductions. Even when they cut a department I worked in, they'd shift me to another area, knowing I'd just kick in and learn the new job (which was pretty cool because I picked up a helluva skill set).

Not this time. Although this time the staff cuts consisted of just one. No offer of reduced hours or alternate placement - just "where's your parking pass?"

Incidentally, I was the oldest person on the office payroll (but not near retirement) and due for an additional week of vacation next year. Oh yeah, and I've become politically active.

Jerks. Never thought I'd say that about them, but I've been calling them worse for a few days now!!!

We'll be OK. I just vetted my updated resume with another former employee, and she pronounced it suitably glowing without being overly smarmy.

You guys on this thread are my lifeline!

When I was serving time in HR and they had a "RIF," by law they had to provide every victim (my word) who was over 40 a breakdown of every other victim by age. I'm not sure if it was federal law or state law, but maybe you should look into it.

90. Halliburton in Burma: "pipleline projects led to crimes against humanity".

...WASHINGTON - Lawyers for victims of human rights abuses committed by the military regime in Burma claim that the Republican Party's vice presidential nominee was involved in a company that assisted in energy projects in Burma associated with violent human rights abuses.

Republican vice presidential candidate Dick Cheney said Tuesday night's presidential debate made clear the choice between his running mate George W. Bush and Democrat Al Gore. Cheney is shown speaking during the Republican National Convention August 2, 2000 in Philadelphia. (Khue Bui/Reuters)

Until he was selected as vice presidential candidate for the Republican ticket, Dick Cheney headed the energy giant Halliburton, which activists say owned a subsidiary which helped construct two pipelines that involved the forcible relocation of villages, forced labour, rape and murder.

''Halliburton partners and subsidiaries, both before and during Dick Cheney's tenure as CEO, have been contractors for pipeline projects that have led to crimes against humanity in Burma,'' says Katie Redford, a human rights lawyer with EarthRights.

The military government in Burma, also known as Myanmar, has long been considered one of the world's most abusive regimes. The United States and the European Union have imposed economic sanctions against the country due to the military's human rights abuses....

133. It probably won't even make it to the Chimp's desk, considering
how in the Senate 40 is now a majority. If Harry the jellyfish had any brains (which he doesn't) he'd make the pukes actually filibuster and actually debate WHY children shouldn't have health care.

Wake me when it's over. Why are so many willing to give up so much to a self-serving few?

To call them sheep and lemmings is an insult to the animal world.

Even if we don't beat them, maybe we can scare them into not taking our votes for granted.

why the hell aren't they talking about fixing New Orleans and sending money to put a LEVEE instead of sending it to Iraq. That makes me soooo mad.
Why the hell don't they worry about helping their OWN country first

149. And where is the outrage, cal04?
I know we're all basically peaceable and freedom-loving types - but most of the US population appears to have Stockholm Syndrome. How long can you deal with abuse and not react? I'm stunned!

Lotus-eaters. Enablers. Brain-dead zombies.

(sigh)

152. I think we all need a little funny today. Check out this Onion article.

WASHINGTON, DC—In an unexpected move that shocked White House staff and stunned the nation, President George W. Bush arrived unannounced at the Oval Office Monday.

Bush, who flew in from his home in Texas, was greeted by security forces upon landing outside the White House, and quickly escorted through the building's back entrance. Wearing a special suit-and-tie uniform intended to boost morale and show support for men and women serving in the Beltway, Bush entered the East Room at about 3:30 p.m. and addressed a bewildered but enthusiastic crowd of staff members.

"Am I late?" Bush joked to the group of approximately 200, who were led to believe they would be attending a ceremony to honor Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters. Bush's entrance received a standing ovation.

"It is incredible to see firsthand what you brave men and women do every day," Bush said to rousing applause. "You are all heroes."

Telling the group he wished he had the time to work alongside each and every one of them, Bush made general inquiries about conditions at the executive mansion, recruitment of new personnel, and where everyone was eating for lunch. <snip>
