House passes temporary funding bill
House votes funds to avert government shutdown

By Richard Cowan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives, at a budget impasse with President George W. Bush, on Wednesday moved to avert government shutdowns next week when it approved legislation to temporarily fund federal agencies through November 16.

The House passed the temporary funding bill by a vote of 404-14. A Senate vote is expected this week so that Bush can sign the measure into law before the October 1 start of the new fiscal year, when existing money runs out.

The quick injection of money will give Democrats, who control Congress, and Bush nearly seven more weeks to try to reach a budget deal for fiscal 2008.

"This resolution keeps government functioning until Congress and the president can make final decisions" on government spending in the new fiscal year, said House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey, a Wisconsin Democrat.
