Pace: Gay Sex Immoral; Dems: Hate Crimes against Gays = terrorism

Yes, these two topics are related - and clearly illustrate the two mind-sets at work in this country today:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/huff-wires/20070926/pace-homosexuals/
"And that is, very simply, that we should respect those who want to serve the nation but not through the law of the land, condone activity that, in my upbringing, is counter to God's law."

<snip>
The hearing resumed about five minutes later in which Pace said he would be supportive of efforts to revisit the Pentagon's policy so long as it didn't violate his belief that sex should be restricted to a married heterosexual couple.

"I would be very willing and able and supportive" to changes to the policy "to continue to allow the homosexual community to contribute to the nation without condoning what I believe to be activity _ whether it to be heterosexual or homosexual _ that in my upbringing is not right," Pace said.

<snip>
Pace noted that the U.S. Military Code of Justice prohibits homosexual activity as well as adultery. Harkin said, "Well, then, maybe we should change that."

And we wonder why we need hate crime legislation.

Bless the Dems for attaching it to his war spending bill for considering it terrorism at home!

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Democrats are trying to force President Bush to sign hate crimes legislation he has threatened to veto by attaching it to a massive bill funding the Defense Department and the Iraq war.

Writing violent attacks on gays into federal hate crime laws is related to the war because both are strikes against terrorism, according to a Republican senator and other supporters of the measure.

"We simply cannot tolerate violence against our own citizens simply because of their differences," said Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., who is sponsoring the legislation with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass. "We cannot fight terror abroad and accept terror at home."

1. Honestly, I really wonder if Peter Pace has read a damn book in the last
couple decades.

Or a newspaper, or a magazine, or seen a film...

At first I think, well, he must be saying what he says on purpose to assuage the far right, but why would a West Point grad need to do that, and why didn't his military history instructors there speak of Thebes' Sacred Band, and does he not consider bravery to be bravery without astericks.

Then I think, well, maybe he really IS clueless.

It might be instructive for General Pace to debate Gore Vidal. Mr. Vidal has done his own careful look at U.S. history and might be able to dispell General Pace of some of his cluelessness.
