Jenna Bush: "I think there are many ways to serve your country"

http://www.cnn.com/2007/LIVING/personal/09/27/jenna.bush.ap/index.html

<snip>

On other issues, Jenna Bush ducked a question about whether she agreed with her father about the war in Iraq, but she said she understood critics who argue that she and her twin sister, Barbara, should serve in Iraq.

"Obviously I understand that question and see what the point of that question is for sure. I think there are many ways to serve your country. I think ... what's most appropriate for me to do is to teach or to work in UNICEF and represent our country in Latin America."

When asked who was the child in the White House she always thought she'd want to emulate, she replied Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of former President Clinton and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-New York., a Democratic presidential candidate.

"I think Chelsea Clinton is, is very kind and, um, smart and articulate," she said.

"She's always been very friendly to us, but we just wanted to be ourselves, but she was, she's beautiful and poised all the time."

7. Dying in Iraq is for people who volunteer for the military
Edited on Thu Sep-27-07 01:41 PM by Zensea
Yes, I know that some soldiers volunteer as a way out of poverty, but many soldiers volunteer because they are militaristic yahoos.
Then they get more than they may have bargained for -- an actual war.
My perspective is shaped by, among other things, that I was a conscientious objector at the end of the Vietnam war.

It is too easy and cliched to trot out the "dying in Iraq is for poor people" meme.

13. Its the truth.
There is a poverty draft. I know people first hand who volunteered for college money. And don't forget about the hundreds of thousands of poor Iraqis who died because they were to poor to leave the country... What about them?

16. Did I say it wasn't the truth? No, I didn't.
Please re-read my post.
Some people do volunteer to get out of poverty as I wrote already.
Yet some don't.

Plus I will add that there is nothing that requires you to volunteer even if you are in poverty.
I've been in poverty before and never considered, even for a second, volunteering for the military.

19. Theres one more thing.
Edited on Thu Sep-27-07 02:03 PM by TheUniverse
Not all the people who volunteered for military service knew they were going to Iraq. Many people joined after September 11th because they thought the country needed them. How were they to know that George W Bush was going to abuse his power and send them to Iraq in an oil war? For Example, Pat Tillman volunteered for the military after 9/11, and then spent some time in Iraq, even though he disagreed with the war. GWBush let down the troops, and I stand by my statement. The Bush twins and the whole bush family itself sees dying in Iraq as something for the poor, and not for the elite.

8. The inclusion of her "um" is totally inappropriate
There have been great studies on this, where newspaper writers remove "ums" for people they value, and include them (especially for women and minorities). It's disgraceful, whether applied to Jenna or anyone else.

I love this comment she made:

sounds like they are accusing Chelsea for not being herself?

"She's always been very friendly to us, but we just wanted to be ourselves, but she was, she's beautiful and poised all the time."

10. Maybe she could go down the list of how notable "conservatives" have served our country
- limbaugh
- hannity
- krystol
- hume
- rove
- cheney
- coulter
- romney and his sons
- and a passel of other various and asundry conservative chickenhawks

NONE OF THESE JERKOFFS HAVE SERVED OUR COUNTRY IN ANY CAPACITY

I PUT BUSH IN A SEPARATE CATEGORY HE SERVED HIS COUNTRY. DISHONORABLY.

Since her daddy dearest is so anti-UN it makes all her actions hollow and pointless unless she had the courage to openly renouce his beliefs.

I have served my country. It was not in the military.

Give til it hurts...

30. Actually it is nice to see that they aren't insulated from what people think
I think it is very enlightening for them to realize that many think they should be on the front line of their Daddy's war.
I think giving props to Chelsea Clinton was very gracious.

32. What the heck does this even mean?
"I think Chelsea Clinton is, is very kind and, um, smart and articulate. She's always been very friendly to us, but we just wanted to be ourselves"

They want to emulate her (kind, smart, articulate, friendly), but that would mean not being themselves. Never mind... it makes perfect sense.
