Edited on Thu Sep-27-07 03:08 PM by IndyOp
As for me... HOPE LIVES!!

:7 :7 :bounce: :bounce: :woohoo: :woohoo: :bounce: :bounce: :7 :7

Randi is on and talking about seeing Al and Tipper at Melissa Etheridge's concert this past week - a performance of "The Awakening".

She told Al, with tears in her eyes, that she wanted him to run and he held her head between his hands & kissed her cheek.

Melissa, Al & Randi at LiveEarth...

Order it here... http://music.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?EAN=602517394148&z=y

On edit: Kissed her cheek, not head.

139. About a "deadline" to announce......
We in California are beginning to collect petition signatures on October 9. We have until Dec. 4 to collect 500 signatures in 53 districts to get his name on the ballot.

And we will do it!

you know some of my friends and I joked that if we saw him start to lose weight that he was running - well lets hope there is some truth in our banter - because I say he HAS LOST weight and I PRAY TO GOD HE IS RUNNING - but I just wish he would do it already.....this Hillary is inevitable thing is getting on my last nerve....

uses name calling as a tool to belittle (better then any fifth grader)...it's great he's looking so good. I just hope he doesn't get a face lift or anything like that, they'd rip his to shreds (using before and after pictures).

Become comatose almost, and please, do NOT talk to Al again, under ANY cirumstances. I should have known it was a bad idea. I guess I should tell you that if Gore runs, I leave the Wetzelbill/Kurovski ticket, albeit with great sadness.

Perhaps before you take more medicine you could have a chat with the present "front runner" for the sake of the Wetzelbill/Kurovski ticket, but do NOT talk to Gore, whatever you do.

We reached 100,000 in July, when we delivered the petition to Gore's office. We were at 113,000 on September 24. At this moment (1:55 p.m. Eastern), we're at 121,665. Randi's plug was a godsend.

54. You had to include those last two lines, didn't you?
I play that song now almost every day. I am from Tennessee and I never appreciated that song when I lived there. For some reason, I have recently (and unexpectedly) started playing it on my piano, although I abandon the country lilt and add a little jazzy touch to the tune, but those last two lines just break me up now when I come to them.

I think of Tennessee now as Gore country, but I so want him here in the Oval Office, 15 miles down the road from where I now live, doing what he was born to do -- being President of the United States, the leader of the free world.... (The clock is ticking on that phrase, isn't it?) But Gore could restore our reputation to exactly that again.

If he doesn't run, I do know just how much THE REST OF THE WORLD and I have lost.

And I do remember the night, it was a night in December 2000 when I watched and listened in disbelief to a reporter on MSNBC reading an opinion rendered by the Supreme Court ....

And of course, instead of standing there and thanking him for his work now she pulls a stunt like that. And I said it before and I will say it again... that picture of her at Live Earth shows an inappropriate way to place her hands on a man who she supposedly respects. If you ask me she just has a crush on him. She sure seems to stalk him where ever he goes. And where's the picture of this event if this really happened? Did she forget her camera, or did she just embellish her story a bit?

Edited on Fri Sep-28-07 05:49 AM by RestoreGore
But of course, some here will use ANYTHING to not have to discuss the climate crisis or Mr. Gore's real passion and work or what WE MUST be doing now. It is as if they all have their fingers in their ears and shouting LALALALALALALALALALALA just as the beltway has for the last thirty years this crisis has been building to this point. Now all of sudden they care? Where? Is Randi Rhodes carbon neutral? Is her show? Has she even committed to supporting ANY of the projects Al Gore is now head of? If not, it's just more politically motivated BS.

If I were Mr. Gore and this really happened I would watch myself. She seems either utterly obsessed or with another agenda in mind. And you can bet your ass that if he ever did this and couldn't meet their "expectations" they would throw him down in a heartbeat. That too seems to be the way of "politics."

He is scheduled to go to India this December to conduct a two day slideshow presentation and training session to get the youth of India to spread the message of the state of our planet and be empowered to do something about it. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=1910909&mesg_id=1910909 He is also scheduled to take it to South America and has stated he will take it to Africa. I surely do think that deserves more discussion and praise of this man and the mission we should all be on rather than some weepy phony radio celebrity looking for an ego boost.

117. Was it sarcasm? Or was it the FREAKING TRUTH???
Gore has been ignored by the Democratic Party since his loss, until his book was released. Now that people realize that our three main choices are going to collapse in the face of the Republican onslaught, they're grasping at him and asking him to take a bullet for the party again.

I think if I were Gore, a man pissed on by his party, and all of a sudden I was surrounded by a bunch of fanboys wanting me to go through hell again, then yes. I would string you along as long as I could, then give you a big uplifted finger and let the Party go down to defeat again. "Maybe you should have asked me about five years ago, you jerks," I'd say, as I retired to private life and awaited the Democratic defeat.

And yes, your salty tears would taste sweet to me.

Maybe you think I'm ascribing cruelty to Gore. But maybe that slap in the face of the Democratic Party and its denizens might be just what they need. Maybe they need to be ground into the dirt before they can develop some principles and courage and do what they need to do.

125. I think you may be confusing the DLC power bosses
with the actual people who belong to the Democratic Party. To those people Gore said in his concession speech

"Some have asked whether I have any regrets and I do have one regret: that I didn't get the chance to stay and fight for the American people over the next four years, especially for those who need burdens lifted and barriers removed, especially for those who feel their voices have not been heard. I heard you and I will not forget."

I took that personally, and I have never forgotten Al Gore.

138. My only rant: why not improve the candidates we have?
I can only see it as wishful thinking that Al Gore - an enlisted or drafted Al Gore - would help save America from the Bushies. If he had really wanted to get in the race he would have done so already.

The only reason people want to see Gore run is because they're dissatisfied with Clinton, Obama and Edwards. Frankly, so am I. But I'm only dissatisfied because they're not charging into this the way that nearly everybody here feels - angry, outraged, ready to bust heads.

I'm least interested in Hillary Clinton, since she seems to be more right-wing than even moderate, but if she would stop that silly giggling and express some righteous anger at a Republican stupidity like abuse of our soldiers - and back it up with votes - I might stomach her as a candidate.

Barack Obama sounds wonderful, like a preacher giving an optimistic sermon. But he needs to give a hellfire sermon, especially on matters he should be expected to scream about, such as black teenagers being lynched and segregated in the present day. And black people being driven out of their homes like the Amerinds off their lands, except without reservations.

And Edwards...why did he let Ann Coulter get away with calling him gay? Why did he need his wife to defend himself? If a man truly believes in sexual equality he should be able to scream imprecations - even curse words, which cannot be censored by federal law in a campaign ad - at a woman. (Assuming, that is, that Coulter is a woman and not a clone made from Bill O'Reilly's falafel in the bathtub.)

Anger means passion. Passion, not for war or greed or rape, but for righting wrongs, ending outrages and making America mean something positive to the world again. If the "big three" candidates aren't doing their job - getting screaming angry - tell them. Deny them funding and tell them it's because they aren't angry about Bush and the thugs running our country. Tell them to do the jobs they claim they want to do.

But don't go hoping for Al Gore to come in and save your hash. That's the real meaning behind my "tears" remark. I think Gore doesn't want to run because we - all of us, the Democratic Party and progressives in general - don't deserved to be saved from our own passivity.

111. it's not even the money (at least not what i was thinking about)
it was more about the joy from living--i feel that so much of that joy has been stolen from my life

the luxury of focusing on your children and family without being preoccupied and angry and unhappy about the way our country has turned, without thinking how these neocons and their crazed spending will affect my child's future, how this right wing supreme court will impact my daughter's life.

without such a heavy heart, without so much worry and concern, without so much disgust and anger i would have been a better person. i would not have had to struggle as much to try & get beyond all of the negatives, the strain would have been less, the stress would have been far less.

and with less of the negatives inside it would have made a difference on the outside--more tolerant of the bumps and rough spots, more happiness, more of an ability to feel joy, and to be genuinely happy

all of my daughter's teen years have been spent under republik rule--it's how she has grown up and what she knows--and there is a level of acceptance she has for it. i wish i could make her truly understand/feel/realize life wasn't always like this, that things were different/better, that this is not the way it has to be or should be--that life could be so much better.

73. He said several times he wasn't running.
Why should he? He's served the public all his life and he's enjoying the one he's living now immensely. Private life rewards him well and he's able to do more of what he wants to do like raising awareness for the environment.

Besides, the big money players in the DLC don't care for him too much as they've got their eye on Hillary. Add to the fact that he was robbed back in '00 and subsequently dumped on as a "Loserman" by people from all sides (despite the reality that the Supreme Court broke the law in the process) and the lack of gratitude from the public (including his own state mind you when it voted for Bush) and you can see why he isn't in the race.

If he gets out there to run again he'll be hammered from all sides, especially the people who said he wasn't any different from Bush (yes L.A. Times, Michael Moore, and Ralph "things gotta get worse before they get better" Nader, I'm talking about you for starters). Sorry folks, but he isn't running.

If you ask me - I think Gore-Obama would be the strongest ticket in 2008.

But I don't think Gore will jump in unless there is a groundswell of support from people asking him to run.

For me the last possible date he could get in before the primaries is Sunday November 4th.

I just picked that date because it is one year before election day.

THE LAST TEMPTATION OF AL GORE
By Eric Pooley
TIME Magazine -- May 17, 2007

Let's say you were dreaming up the perfect stealth candidate for 2008, a Democrat who could step into the presidential race when the party confronts its inevitable doubts about the front runners. You would want a candidate with the grass-roots appeal of Barack Obama -- someone with a message that transcends politics, someone who spoke out loud and clear and early against the war in Iraq. But you would also want a candidate with the operational toughness of Hillary Clinton -- someone with experience and credibility on the world stage.
In other words, you would want someone like Al Gore -- the improbably charismatic, Academy Award-winning, Nobel Prize-nominated environmental prophet with an army of followers and huge reserves of political and cultural capital at his command.

77. But on the other hand
If you look at what Gore is saying, then I don't think he is getting ready to run.

Interview with 02138 Magazine (Harvard) - Sept.-Oct. 2007

A recent poll shows that if you entered the presidential race, you would handily win the New Hampshire primary. Isn’t that tempting?

Sure. But I am old enough and have been a candidate enough times to have a very high level of resistance to temptations of that sort. I trust my instincts, and it doesn’t feel like it’s the right thing for me.

But if you believe global warming is such a crisis, wouldn’t you be more effective within the White House than outside it?

I’m under no illusion that there’s any position in the world as influential as that of president. But it doesn’t feel like the right thing for me to be a candidate at this point. I have had the experience of seeing how necessary it is to have adequate support among the people as a whole for the dramatic policy changes that are needed. It may well be that the best use of whatever skills and talents and experiences that I have gained is to concentrate on creating that sea change in mass opinion about this issue, so that whoever is elected will face a groundswell from the people themselves.

Will you endorse a candidate in the primary?

Odds are that I will.

Who?

I haven’t made that decision yet.

Do you feel some obligation to endorse the wife of your former boss?

Uh … no. I have friendships with her and with the other candidates, and they’re all on equal footing at this point as far as I’m concerned.

I have and will continue to support Gore no matter what decision he makes about the 2008 election. I'm also active in changing this BS system that stole the election in the first place to avert a repetition in the future. Hopefully you are as well.

He doesn't have to deal with that BS again, if he doesn't choose to. My opinion of him won't change either way.

I would, however be disappointed that the best possible candidate for getting this country back on track would not be running. I am finding it very difficult to enthusiastically get behind any of the current candidates, for a variety of reasons.

That is all...

102. As much as I like Al Gore...
As much as I like Al Gore, and think he would be a great President, and wish every day for the past six years he was our President instead of the poor excuse for the President we currently have, I don't think Al Gore should run.

Why not? Simply put, Republicans will make it seem that Gore's run is all about avenging 2000, and the media will gladly parrot those claims ad nauseum. Everything good that Al stands for will be pushed aside, and it will all be about how Gore is so bitter about what happened six years ago and how he has "sour grapes".

Plus, the ridiculous slanders against him--that he's "boring", that he somehow took sole credit for "inventing" the internet, that global warming is some "junk science" and how he's somehow some huge hypocrite for not walking every single place he goes--all of that is going to be dredged up by the pond scum on the right and thrown at him all over again. The "rock star" Al Gore image has become over the past few years will soon vanish, and the Republicans will be trumpeting the same lies they did in 2000, and it will distract from the rightful message of Al's campaign.

If you doubt the Republican's ability to distract from the true issues and the media's complictiness in letting them control the conversation, let me ask you why the Petreaus hearings became all about a single newspaper advertisement instead of why the hell we are still in Iraq?

I love Al. I really do. But I worry that people are overestimating the strength of his campaign, given the nature of those on the right and what they are willing to say and lie about.

103. The right will trash anyone
that runs on the Dem ticket.

Al would win by a mile, by the people who are sick of what this administration has done to the country and to the world.

And he would be the best one to govern us out of all the people running.

106. True...
True, but the 2000 election gives them some extra ammunition. And sadly there are way too many people out there who aren't as politically astute as you or me who would be willing to believe those lies. The Right will dust off "Sore Loserman" and there are bound to be people who will instinctively think "What's Al Gore doing trying to prove himself again? He must be so bitter about 2000!"

Sad but true. Dick Nixon was an anomoly--more often than not a candidate has one chance to prove himself as a nominee in the general election before the general public says "You had your chance..." (I'm not saying that's what I believe as it relates to Gore, but many will.)

113. Disagree
the press could not get away with this garbage again and as far as 2000, wouldn't 2004 had been the year for "avenging"? If Gore ran, he would not let the same old GOP lies about him go unanswered like he did in 2000.

109. 121,190 thus far
This tells me there is a huge grass roots effort for Gore not to mention a very obvious feeling of unease with the current crop of Dems now running.

I thought the deadline to submit for your candidacy has already expired a couple of days ago? I would kill for Al to run but I think it's already too late.

115. Wow! Look at that waistline!
Thanks for the photo. You have to be really motivated to lose all that blubber in such a short time. Also, Al has been opening up the door a little more lately, from saying, "no, I am not a politician" to "I haven't ruled it out." You don't have to be a bone-reading oracle to decipher what he is saying. The minute he announces, the whole world will stand up and cheer, not just we, the long-suffering people in the U.S.

116. draftgore.com credits Randi with Gore Surge yesterday
Sept. 27 -- Americans across the nation are rallying around a potential Al Gore candidacy by signing the Draft Gore petition in record numbers. Thousands have volunteered to walk the streets and donate to a campaign to propel the former Vice President into the Democratic nomination for President. Donations have also surged on Thursday.

After a call to action from radio talk show host Randi Rhodes, Americans by the thousands pledged their support to Gore, whose popularity has snowballed in recent years, both as a result of his high-profile campaign to raise awareness about global climate change and his vocal and courageous opposition to the Bush administration's disastrous policies at home and abroad.

127. Kucinich is the next best thing to Gore.
Voted against the AUMF, the MCA, the Patriot Act, FISA protect America act, against all funding for the war-occupation. Only candidate to agree to end NAFTA and withdraw us from the WTO. Only candidate to already have introduced single payer not for profit health care for everyone, plus articles of impeachment against Cheney for war crimes. Only candidate to agree to get all the troops out of Iraq within 3 mos and establish a Department of Peace. Only one out there calling out Cheney and Bush for trying to provoke Iran into a war.

Kucinich is the only candidate that will bring about real, meaningful change in this country, a country so close to total fascism and executive rule. Bush has garnered executive power beyond what the framers of this country would call constitutional and is not going to hand it over easily to a democrat unless that dem is willing to play along. Kucinich can't be bought. He has a strong clear plan in making the environment and global warming a top priority along with education and peace. I am so sick of all the blowhards talking about how tough we are...we know how tough we are. We are also caring, nurturing and supportive of world peace and prosperity. The end result of the 'American Dream' is helping to ensure we can all share in it.
You could substitute Gore's name for Kucinich on all of the above . They are so similar in what they hope to achieve. Since electability is not an issue in this presidential election...whoever wins the democratic nomination will be the next president...this is one of those rare times we don't have to compromise on getting the best candidate for president. Kucinich is the man. The real change for the better, for peace and prosperity and the environment. We can make it happen and just ignore all the political hype for once.

Kucinich/Edwards '08...the truth ticket...the only "real" change. Gore is not going to run. Kucinich is the best that is running.

128. To all you Gore supporters. If he does decide to run, when do you think he
would make the announcement?

If he seriously doesn't want to run, should he do a press conference with an 'official statement'?

I really like and admire Gore a LOT, but I'm not at the WANT SO BAD level that you guys are, so I'm just curious as to what you think the timeline might be and his best approach to either. (I know you want him to declare NOW, but I'm looking for an objective opinion, if that's possible :) )

My heart goes out to you -- wanting something so deeply and not knowing what the outcome will be.

Hang in there!!

And he DOES look great -- don't know if I've ever seen him looking so buff.

143. Hell I'd guess as late as December.
Because I'm convinced that a decision has not been made. Not even a date to make a decision probably exists. It's up to us to build the a platform that would suit him. But we should not expect that he will step onto it right away.

We try to keep Gore in double digits polling, keep the potential candidate discussion brewing (this is about the only use Gore has for the MSM in primary terms until they funally come clean on 2k). Gore will certainly stay in the spotlight. No guarantees, but I'd call it a good plan.

If you watch the Dem Primary debates from start to finish, you can learn something. I have good things to say about all of them (fav Dodd). But most of the nation only sees Gravel's rant? I mean, add the Don't Taze Me Bro to the audiance, and we get 45 munites of teasers from Blitzer. Toxic.

About the best thing from the Dem primary debates as seen through the media lens is the comparison to Republican debates. What a bunch of Neanderthal Scat they have.

147. True. He'd be 'skipping' NH which would hurt.
Candidates who want to participate in the primary can file beginning at 8 am on 10/15. All you need is $1,000. Filing closes before 5 pm on November 2nd. Gardner said he would immediately then begin printing absentee ballots.

http://hotlineblog.nationaljournal.com/archives/2007/09/dating_bill_gar.html

I can dig up 1k and there is an Allan Gore in PA I found in the phone book...

OK yes the delegates would be missed. But IA/NH are more about momentum than the delegates. I think if CA effort is successful it may be just enough attention.

This moved up 3 weeks. This primary leapfrogging hurts the cause. But at some point, super tuesday voters are going to be concerned about holiday dinner, rather than 2007 primaries.

Or so I convince myself.

136. You can sign the petition to draft Gore, ask those you know to do the same,
and donate. (unless you already have.) You can also personally write to him and state your concerns.
