Finally! The Democratic leadership in the Senate does something right, re. legislation |
|
Attaching the hate crimes legislation to the war funding bill is a smart political maneuver, as well as sound public policy. Now Bush can either a) sign the bill, and allow the hate crimes legislation to become law; or b) pander to the anti-gay crowd and veto it, while no longer being able to make the bogus claim that "the Democrats don't want to fund the troops".
Beat the Republicans at their own game.

4. it's a pointless gesture..the Senate Republicans won |

the amendment passed with 69 votes. Senate Republicans let Chimpy know that his veto threat is meaningless.
edited to add that the Senate Republicans won because no one wants to campaign on the backs of sick kids.

9. How is it "pointless" if the amendment passed? |

Yes, there were enough votes to make the bill veto-proof. But are you saying that the Democrats should not have included the Matthew Shepherd Act amendment???
