Teach-In on Impeachment

I would like to extend an invitation to any and all of my DU friends to attend the "Teach-In on Impeachment" on October 13, in Binghamton, NY.

Hopefully, DUers are familiar with John Nichols and Elizabeth de la Vega. If you have not already read their recent books -- Mr. Nichols' "The Genius of Impeachment: The Founder's Cure for Royalism" and Ms. de la Vega's "United States v. George W. Bush et al," you really should.

US Representative Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) is a good friend of the liberal and progressive democrats. About six weeks ago, I mentioned on DU that I believe he will soon be playing a national role in the effort to hold the OVP responsible for their illegal activities.

Tim Grippen was seriously wounded during the Tet Offensive. He spent two years in military hospitals, before coming home to join with other veterans in protest against the war. There came a time where he became convinced he could do the most good by becoming a politician. Tim served as the Broome County Executive, and has since become the Executive Director of Opportunities for Broome.

Just over two years ago, on September 23, 2005, Tim spoke to supporters of the St. Patrick's Four, the Catholic Workers being tried in federal court for a Berrigan Brothers' style protest against the Bush-Cheney war of aggression in Iraq. "War doesn't get shut down simply by marching, but marching does get attention," he told the crowd. "Politicians pay attention to people. When people are angry about something, politicians take notice. People need to make clear to members of Congress that if they stick with this war, it's gonna end their careers."

2. I hope that
there is something similar in every city and town across the country. And I have a feeling that I may be posting some photos that document that members of the Democratic Underground attended and participated in this event.

15. I'm glad that
Representative Hinchey is going to be participating. The first fliers had not listed him as being among the speakers. The Broome County Peace Action group has put together an important teach-in.

7. People Are Angry
But so far the 'reality' based politicians have chosen not to notice.

19. People are angry.
Actually, there has been a significant change in perception among politicians and the powers-that-be in both parties that combine to form the ruling class in America. The democrats ran against the war in 2006. They are fully aware of the discontent among the citizens, which is shown in the dismal polls that indicate little approval of their inaction. As a result, there are attempts to inject novocaine into political discussions, to keep the citizens in a numbed state, where they will peacefully suffer the horrors of Iraq.

Politicians will take notice of events such as this teach-in, in which citizens "Just Say NO!" to that novocaine.

25. I will ask
the Broome County Peace Action group .... I think it would be great for C-SPAN to cover it. I'm sure that the "local" media will be there. I think that we should consider having DUers "lobby" MSNBC's David Shuster to show up.

18. Is there a way to find out if they are taking this
on the road? Do they live in upstate NY but willing to travel elsewhere? Could you post or pm me a contact number for the organizing group to find out more? There is a peace group here I could pass this info on to but I am not sure what kind of funds they have access to to invite folks of this caliber here.

It will be a fascinating discussion with those authors leading it. Whew.

27. I think that
only Tim Grippen and Rep. Hinchey are from upstate NY. I will try to e-mail you the information requested as soon as I can.

This is the type of program that should be taking place in every city and town across the United States.
