116. Shout this out every time you see an Army/National Guard recruitment ad in your local movie houses.
I did that in Nashville and the audience applauded.

The theater chain has now stopped running those obscene ads (for some reason...).

216. And they're obscene how....?
And I doubt the theatre stopped running them (if they even really did) because you shouted your ass off during a movie. Unless you're anti-military all together, the ads are fine.

239. If you've seen them, you would know how over the top they are.
Edited on Fri Sep-28-07 04:11 PM by Fly by night
Besides, I didn't suggest that my comments were the reason the ads were dropped, although I did appreciate about 80% of the people present clapping their approval. Perhaps the ads were having no effect in stemming the continuing decline in enlistments that even a continuous decline in enlistment standards has not reversed (as pointed out by both General Pace and the Marine Corps second-in-command (whose name I can't remember) just this week in the news).

I am certainly not anti-military -- that is why I want to bring our troops home. I live very near Ft. Campbell and we all (on and off the base) were angered by Rush Limp-dick's comments about "phony soldiers." After all, two of the 82nd Airborne authors of the recent New York Times op-ed piece against the Iraq war are already dead. They are my neighbors, and I am glad that they spoke up. It demonstrates the admirable bravery of our soldiers, to speak truth to the illegitimate (and unelected) power that has seized the reins of our government.

In case you haven't seen them yet, I would recommend two movies for you: "No End in Sight" and "In the Valley of Elah". If you've seen either or both, let me know your impressions. I'd also like your impressions of the recent report that fewer than half of the votes cast by U.S. soldiers overseas went uncounted in 2006.

Edit to add: Welcome to DU.

I don't know any personally who want to be there. I rightly blame W and his cronies for this mess and NOT our men and women who are just doing their jobs. If our military were to start making political decisions it would be a v ery slippery slope. There is good reason for having civilian control of the military.

Bring them home and give them the care they need, fully, quickly and free of charge.

10. Morale is past the breaking point...and THAT'S what ended Vietnam....
Noam Chomsky said this a while back about Vietnam:

...

What happened was, the army started falling apart. One of the reasons that the army was withdrawn was because the top military wanted it out of there. They were afraid they were not going to have an army anymore. Soldiers were fragging officers. The whole thing was falling apart. They were on drugs.

GIs' morale dips as Iraq war drags on

...

"The only person I know who believed Iraq was improving was killed by a sniper in May," the blogger, identified only as Alex from Frisco, Texas, said in a separate e-mail.

The Army's suicide rate is at its highest in 23 years: 17.3 per 100,000 troops, compared with 12.4 per 100,000 in 2003, the first year of the war. Of the 99 suicides last year, 27 occurred in Iraq.

The latest in a series of mental health surveys of troops in Iraq, released in May, says 45% of the 1,320 soldiers interviewed ranked morale in their unit as low or very low. Seven percent ranked it high or very high.

11. Here's how I see the men and women of the military;
just as people. They're no braver or finer than the public at large. They're mostly young, many of them were at loose ends or wanted funds for college and that's why they joined. Others had a youthful and romantic view of serving the country. Still others wanted an adventure. This business about how they're all heroes and the best of the best, is simply rhetoric.

They're just people. Most of them young, being used as instruments of aggression.

And they're being in Iraq and being at the disposal of the little madman in the WH, isn't making us safer.

144. Of course not. And I am talking about cheer leading threads in general, not
this specific one.

I just don't want to feel manipulated into expressing support for anything.

I come from a family heavily involved in the military (actually since the Revolutionary War) and recently had a nephew in Iraq. Of course I support the troops, though I do not support the war.

Yep, I was just manipulated right here.

154. I always read and usually respond in some way to "support the troops" threads
because I have felt that there has been something amiss with this slogan since repubs started putting the little yellow ribbons on their pickups as a sly way to say "I support my leader, President Bush and his decision to attack Iraq because Saddam, Osama, and all Muslims are bad."

Upon hearing stories from soldiers returning from Iraq, especially my own nephew who was so distraught he shot himself (not fatally) to avoid going back, I call bullshit on simplistic slogans that cover deeper agendas.

I am simply distrustful of this poster, that's all. And perhaps I'm totally wrong. Only time and the DU graveyard will reveal the answer.

The "support the troops" memes, disgust me to no end.

My youngest brother has been in and out of both Iraq and Afghanistan repeatedly, from the beginning. As an officer, working to implement the military policies of the Bush Administration, he has traveled extensively and seen many things that have changed his personality profoundly.

And make no mistake, he regards with considerable scorn, the sort of "support" offered by the OP and others.

Fortunately, he will be retiring very soon.

134. So, Cali's post was in RESPONSE to your own.
and your responses to her were made AFTER this thread was already posted.

Was the 'no flamefest' request the only edit? I think all of the criticism of your expression here is bunk. If you don't want to participate in a thread it doesn't say anything more than you didn't want to respond. You made an expression of support and asked others to chime in with their own. I think that's a perfectly natural and understandable thing to do here. I don't think that a couple of threads thanking our military for their service out of the countless repetitious threads on so many inane topics is at all unseemly. I take your expression as offered. We can debate the rest of your views elsewhere. Your sentiments are right on.

Sorry to sound judgmental, but Zandor's post reminds me of forced votes in the House or Senate where legislators are forced to vote a simple yes or no without exploration of the subtleties of the matter.

Support is much more than just a f***ing yellow ribbon on the back of an SUV or a post where I exclaim my gratitude in caps with a bunch of smilies and American flags.

I know five Iraq War soldiers. One lost his hands and his stomach for killing. One joined because he "wanted the family" he "never had." Two joined because they wanted to avenge 9/11. And the fifth joined "to get away." Members of the military are as varied as their reasons for joining.

And it's sickening that the GOP has purged the generals who where not "yes-men." So now our soldiers are being thrown away by officers who apparently agree with Kissinger.

by donating to our local VFW.
The troops are to be honored and supported for doing
their jobs. The one who should be condemned for this
war is dumbya, he initiated it, and lied about it to
get it. The blame starts with him.

Stop making new veterans until you start taking better
care of the ones we already have George.

They're behavior reflects upon our country. The behavior of their superiors, hiding and condoning attrocities, reflects upon our country.

We need to support the troops, because they represent us. But we also need to hold them accountable, because they represent us.

126. that's the No True Scotsman fallacy
to paraphrase...

you: "I support the troops"

cali: "Some troops aren't worthy of support"

you: "Well, they aren't really troops"

How can it have any meaning to "support the troops" if you get to decide which ones you want to support?

137. It's the same fallacy
of Christians who deny the violence done in the name of their relgion.

Violence committed by professed christians, in the name of their christianity, because of their religion convictions, but "they're not real christians" so Christianity is not responsible.

That means, by definition, only saints are real christians. And apparently, the same is true of soldiers.

I didn't see it that way, especially when I posted here.

To me, I saw a thread showing support for our troops.

A knew a young man who was one of the first casualties
in this insane war. My brother is a veteran of the Vietnam
war who fortunately made it home.

They and their brothers/ sisters are who I had in mind when
I posted here.

:hi:

PS- I oppose this war just as I opposed the war in Vietnam.

The difference is, our soldiers were spit on
when they came home from Vietnam.

I find people trying to use King's image when they are advocating war to be offensive and vile -- way more so than flowers. To each his own, I suppose.

Perhaps supporting the troops means something different when you have a loved one there, who you know would rather be home holding his newborn son for the first time.

I should probably stop reading this thread because it's something that I look at from an already emotional view.

185. I don't think the op "advocates war"
Edited on Fri Sep-28-07 12:20 PM by bigtree
any more than any enlistment is advocating war.

Is there a thread by Zandor that I'm not aware of which advocates war? For someone who insists on being so precise with words, I'd expect more objectivity than claiming that the expression in the op 'advocates war'

the op:

DUers That Support the Brave Men and Women of Our Military, Check In!!!

Your courage and service to our country is something I will always be grateful for.

No flamefest, please. This thread if for those who would like to thank those that serve our country in a way that makes us proud!

On edit: We want you home soon!

Martin supported the troops, even as he advocated against their militarism:

". . . we force young black men and young white men to fight and kill in brutal solidarity. Yet when they come back home that can’t hardly live on the same block together."

At this point I should make it clear that while I have tried in these last few minutes to give a voice to the voiceless on Vietnam and to understand the arguments of those who are called enemy, I am as deeply concerned about our troops there as anything else. For it occurs to me that what we are submitting them to in Vietnam is not simply the brutalizing process that goes on in any war where armies face each other and seek to destroy. We are adding cynicism to the process of death, for they must know after a short period there that none of the things we claim to be fighting fro are really involved. Before long they must know that their government has sent them into a struggle among Vietnamese, and the more sophisticated surely realize that we are on the side of the wealthy and secure while we create a hell for the poor.

158. Oh Yes!
Absolutely. MLK would loved the idea of unconditionally supporting troops. No military force has ever acted against the people they're supposed to protect. No military force has ever committed attrocities. And of course the military treats everyone within the military with equality and respect.

The military is a saintly institution. Definitely, he would have seen so many reasons to give unqualified, unconditional support to the military. :P

Yes, I think we need to see this stuff wrapped in the flag next. Maybe that will help.

174. Your Characterization Of Ms. Cali's Comments, Mr. Zandor, Is Nonesensical
Edited on Fri Sep-28-07 11:52 AM by The Magistrate
She has pointed out an absurd inflation of language often employed in reference to military personnel, and is correct that there are disturbing elements to it, and that it is a form of language and pattern of expression often encountered in militarist, even fascist, political life.

Military coups are generally thrown by people who believe that, by virtue of being soldiers, they are superior as patriots and citizens to 'mere' civilians, and that it is the armed forces that are the true body of the nation, not the people comprising it.

Soldiers, sailors, airmen, even Marines, are no different from, and no better than, anyone else. They possess no unique virtue lacked by all others: as a class of human, they are no more selfless, no more virtuous, not even more courageous, than the average run of humanity. The history of conscript mass armies, sweeping great swathes of the citizenry willy-nilly under arms, has demonstrated this quite conclusively, as the conscripts, once trained and hardened to the task, perform no differently than volunteers.

Throughout most of human history, these facts have been broadly recognized. The old Chinese saw that 'good iron is not made into nails, good men are not made into soldiers' finds echo in many other places. Kipling's poems are rife with the genial disregard of soldiers common to society, and Wellington himself described his men as 'the scum of the earth enlisted for drink.' A nation which displays a certain indifference to the martial virtues, and refrains from an elevated view of soldiering, is generally a safer and freer polity than one which does the opposite.

The phrase 'support the troops' is, in fact, a base political coinage aimed at rendering difficult well-deserved criticism of a particular regime's employment of soldiers. When a government goes to war dishonestly, against the national interest, and presses the conflict in a manner often criminal by plain reading of the laws of war, it seeks to make criticism of its actions and itself seem to be criticism of the soldiers it employs as its tools. But the two things are very different, as anyone who has given so much as two minutes consecutive thought to the question will see quite clearly.

"Most people would sooner die than think, and many do."

86. US soldiers
are no more or less deserving of "support" than anyone else. I "support" the right of all people to live in a world free of military violence, and that includes US soldiers.

I am however far from being proud of their "service" in the destruction and rapine of another country, so if you don't mind, I will refrain from thanking them.

I apologize, if you consider this message a 'flame'. I do understand the need to assign noble motives, in some manner or other, to the State's military aggression, but I took an interest in reading at a young age, especially about war and oppression, and it has served me well, as a tool for resisting those feelings of nationalism.

I would prefer to see those sentiments included along with any support expressed for the military. But, I appreciate your sentiment as it is.

195. You support action with Iran.
You can't support the troops and at the same time support a war with Iran.

It doesn't work that way.

207. I am a Democrat because I believe in the inherent value of ALL people. Including the military.
So my support for them is interlaced with my support for everyone in need. Right now, the military is in need because they are being placed in an untenable situation. The best way to support them is to bring them home and out of harm's way. The best way to support them five years ago would have been to avoid this war.

that went something like (major paraphrasing, from a most likely 2 year old memory ahead)
"when I was in theater, the only 'support' I gave a shit about was the air support we called in to neutralize the VCs"

Kinda sours you on "the troops".

256. Support our troops with promises made being promises kept.
Do not use them thoughtlessly for illegal wars of aggression.

Honor them by keeping trustworthy, politicians and citizens alike. And if that trust is broken then work to remove the offending politician.

Bring them home.

257. I have great respect for you
and the hell you live in day after day.
The neo-cons are hell bent for oil, and we can't pry their grubby fingers off the controls. But we keep trying.
When the Commander-in-Chimp decides an election "wouldn't be prudent", please be on our side. My arms are no match for Blackwater and I think that goes for most of us.

Stay alive and come home human, peace.
