for the political class to come around on their issues. They took control of their situations, demanded change for the better, and they got it. Politicians only passed laws AFTER the marches and the protests.
The lesson here is that the nomination of any candidate is irrelevant to positive change. Positive change only occurs when the people make a demand for it.

Pinkertons, fire hoses, vigilantes, the Klan. I wouldn't want to suggest otherwise. That said, we have gotten awfully "efficient" in dealing with dissent these days.
I find it helpful to re-read Zinn at such times to remember exactly the points you've made.
