Calif. Bans Widely Used Home Ozone Air Purifiers

(AP) DIAMOND BAR The state has banned widely used indoor ozone air purifiers, saying the devices aggravate many of the problems their advertisements claim to relieve.

The California Air Resources Board calls the ban the first of its kind in the nation.

In a statement, the board says some manufacturers of ozone generators have argued that ozone has the ability to reduce levels of indoor air pollutants, but research has shown the opposite is true.

The new regulations, which take effect in 2009, ban the sale of devices that produce more than .050 parts per million of ozone, a concentration the board says is enough to harm human health. The board estimates about 500,000 Californians have been exposed to excessive levels of ozone because of the devices.

Debra Perkins of Corona both sells and uses the air purifiers. As she told the board, "God gave humans these air purifiers, and you should not take away that gift."

2. Then why is Little Debbie selling them?
I mean, after all, God gave 'em to us.

3. I've got one
Edited on Fri Sep-28-07 11:13 AM by PDenton
It only produces about 0.05 parts per million. It works mostly by creating negative ions that cause dust to collect in air filters in the air conditioner- ozone is mostly a byproduct (and the Ionic Breeze machines have a catalyst to eliminate the ozone). The ozone also does reduce odor somewhat, but it can't eliminate all odors.

Really, there is more naturally occuring ozone in many cities or forests. All it takes is rotting vegetation or a little exhaust exposed to sunlight, and you get some degree of ozone.

5. Electric motors, which are omnipresent, are generators too.

9. Only electric motors with sparking brushes.
This pretty much limits the ozone to very intermittent
production as you don't run your electric drill,
blender, or vacuum cleaner all that long. The motors
that run all the things that run all the time tend
to be "induction" motors that don't produce any
ozone during operation.

4. I bought my Living Air from a nice Christian lady
There seems to be a whole religious movement centered on these products.

I never use it anymore; the only time I plug it in is when I have a very bad odor to get rid of. Then I turn it on and leave the room for a hour or so. Then I open the windows, freshen the air, and remove the air purifier. It works at removing odors, but I would never breathe nor allow my pets to breathe the air it emits.

6. Look at Debra Perkins and remember, kids: This is your brain on Ozone!
Whatta dumbass. Every good-sized city in the country
monitors ozone levels and issues WARNINGS when they
are high, because it's a known health risk.

What kind of snake-oil salesman convinces people to
generate ozone inside their home? :banghead:

8. It's ironical
the one of the origins of the resorts along the south coast of England in Victorian and Edwardian times was that there was alleged to be more health benefiting ozone in the air in the English Channel.

How do small amounts per million of ozone breathed in harm you anyway ?
