Most people prefer to believe their leaders are just and fair even in the face of evidence to the contrary, because once a citizen acknowledges that the government under which he or she lives is lying and corrupt, the citizen has to choose what he or she will do about it. Funny term, that. My great uncle said "rumors" were running rampant through his US Army encampment in Italy, that there were Jews being held prisoner by the thousands in Germany, and that millions had been killed. He said he didn't believe it, because that would require far too many people keeping their mouths shut about it.
