Poll question: What profession is more intrinsically worthy of praise? |
|
I vote Teacher, with Firefighter a close second. Does that make me a bad person?

They're our nation's real heroes!
In all seriousness, I chose Medic. You have to admire people who feel it's their duty to alleviate pain and suffering in all situations. When a violent criminal goes on a rampage, shoots at innocent civilians and lead the police in a high-speed chase, and then crashes his car, paramedics are on the scene to tend to his injuries. They don't ask themselves for a SECOND if the wounded in question is deserving of such kindness--it's a non-issue with them. And whoever we are, we all need a good one at some point.

3. No you're not a bad person! I just think that every profession -- those listed |
|
and those not listed -- contribute positively to the whole. Except maybe Lobbyist. Oh, and then there's Blackwater Operative. Never mind. I'll go with farmer.

The very question is insulting.
All of these professions are important and worthy and necessary.
What counts is that people choosing their professions have the ability to fulfill them ethically, with honor and dedication, to the best of their ability.

36. Exactly, all are important. I think it is in response to thanking/supporting |
|
military just because they are military. Some feel them more worthy of praise than other categories just because. I think that is what this is in response to. And I agree with what you write completely.

10. Professions aren't intrinsically worthy of praise. |
|
Professions are only as good as the people in them. Only people can be worthy of praise, and that changes by the action.

How do you call the action of a star or the intent of a squirrel praiseworthy? You're playing with semantics.

20. Actions of people. Intentions of people. Why not: professions OF PEOPLE? |

It seems unmotivated to me to simply cast the last one out as an a priori impossibility.

It's the people, their actions, their intentions, their professions, not the actions, intentions or professions themselves, that are worthy of praise. Without the people doing them, they aren't praiseworthy.

22. altho I think each and every one of those professions |
|
are important to us all, I just can't vote one above the other. (moms and dads should be there, tho).
reason being - I have a nasty relative in one of these professions (now retired) who always boasted that he was doing something so much more 'worthy' than any of us. He was the hero, we were all slackers. what an ass. but I guess he did teach me something valuable after all - pecking orders suck.

30. All professions are needed |
|
It is so pathetic how people need to find some way, any way, to make themselves superior to others.
Race and religion are passe. That's great, but that doesn't mean that going into a certain profession is meant to do it.
It's OK if other people are equal, really. We don't HAVE to be superior to somebody to have self esteem.

I voted firefighter because it's the profession where you risk your life without causing or potentially causing harm to others. Police is ruled out because of the potential for police brutality.

lawyer for Guantanemo detainee? Buddhist monk in Burma?
Come on. The guy renting videos at Blockbuster is worthy of praise if he does his job whole heartedly, mindfully and a nun treating lepers in New Delhi sucks if she goes about it half assed.
