Germany keen on gaining UN Security Council seat

Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday she was working on gaining the support of US President George Bush to obtain a permanent permanent UN Security Council seat, saying that her country was capable of handling international responsibilities.

The German "Bild" newspaper quoted Merkel as saying she would try her best to gain Bush's support during her two-day visit to his ranch in Crawford Texas in November.

According to the newspaper, Merkel will touch on one possible compromise which is to take a seat for ten years.

Coordinator for German-American Cooperation in the Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany Karsten Voigt told the Koeln Anzeiger newspaper that he hoped Germany would obtain a Security Council seat with the new US government and following the end of Bush's ruling.

He touched on Bush's speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday where noted the need to expand the Security Council but only mentioned Japan by name, adding that this stand was not new.

Currently, only the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China have had permanent seats on the UN Security Council and the power to veto all resolutions
