Donate to John Edwards and Public Financing will DOUBLE your donation for the first $250! -End of Q3
Putting our money where our mouth is

Yesterday, John put his money where his mouth is to end the money game in Washington, D.C. He announced that he would seek public financing for the primary—and challenged his opponents to do the same.

Will they accept his challenge? Only time will tell.

But there's one thing we know for sure: this is a campaign about bringing big, bold change to America—not a money race. You can't buy your way to the Democratic nomination. Candidates have to earn the votes of the American people by laying out their vision for America and their plans for how we can get there as a nation. And that is exactly what John is doing.

For you and me, John's decision means every dollar we give—up to $250 for the primary election—can be matched through public financing. Your contribution of $50 to the campaign over the next 72 hours can become $100. A donation of $100 means the campaign can receive an additional $100. And so on.

We have 72 hours left to meet our goal of raising $1 million online in the final days of the third quarter. With John's commitment to public financing, every contribution of $250 or less can be matched. Together, we can exceed our end-of-quarter goal—so please make your contribution now.

This election should not be about money—it should be about bringing the change we need to this country. We can't allow the lobbyists and special interests to turn this into a money race instead of a race focused on the bold ideas we need to transform America.

John has laid out the boldest plans for change on the issues that truly matter—providing quality health care to every American, ending the war in Iraq, halting global warming and making our economy work again for working Americans. He knows we will never achieve the change we need to see on these issues through compromise and triangulation.

He knows we need to take on the special interests that control Washington, D.C.—and fix the broken system that has been rigged against hard-working Americans for far too long.

We're on a path to victory—but we need your support to get there. Your contribution—up to $250 for the primary—can be matched. Contributors like you are more important than ever to helping us stay competitive so we can get John's message out. So please contribute whatever you can afford today.

This is already the most expensive presidential campaign in history—and we're still months away from when the first vote will be cast! It's getting ridiculous—the simple fact is that the influence of money in politics has gotten out of control. It distracts the candidates, the press and the voters from the issues that really matter.

By choosing public financing, John is rejecting the ways of Washington special interests and putting his faith in grassroots supporters like you. With matching funds for low-dollar contributions, your support now means more than ever.

John joins me in thanking you for your support.

Sincerely,

--David Bonior

3. I did, and do. Edwards didn't, but does.
He's changed his tune now that he needs the money.

5. Edwards has always supported public financing, just didn't think it was realistic.
He made the determination that it was realistic for him to do it and win the primary, so he did it.

6. The NYT calls it a reversal. You say they're wrong?
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/28/us/politics/28campaign.html?_r=1&ref=politics&oref=slogin

Former Senator John Edwards said Thursday that he would accept public financing for the Democratic primaries, reversing his previous plans to raise and spend money without being subject to the public system’s spending limits.

That darn NYT...

7. Oh yeah cuase the NYT is so loved and respected at DU for it's unbaised and correct reporting. snark
The only "reversal" is that Edwards is accepting Public Financing for the 2008 primary. He has always supported it.

10. Why the snide comment?
Your candidate Clark couldn't even decide to run, and Richardson pretends that we will grow our way out of the Social Security crisis. He puts no money anywhere. Next year, don't check the box on your tax form and YOUR money will be safe. So give it a rest.

15. Our money? I think it is optional on your tax form.
If you don't support public financing then don't check the box. It is a simple choice.

9. Give it up for John Edwards!
It all adds up. Every five and ten dollar donation!

Edwards is taking a true progressive stand by turning his back on big corporate lobbyists/donors.

We cannot wait until election day to take action!

11. Woohoo!
Power to the people! This maximizes the value of small dollar contributions. John Edwards will get into the White House and be beholden only to the citizens of the United States! How refreshing!
