George Martin - A Journey For 9/11
The NY Giants might stink this year, but this story doesn't. ABC's profiling what George Martin is now doing to raise funds and awareness for the true heroes of 9/11, the responders.

George Martin - A Journey For 9/11

As a former standout defensive end and tri-captain of the 1986 New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XXI, George Martin knows what it takes to be a leader. Over the span of a 14-year NFL career, all spent with the Giants, Martin was the guy that other players often looked up to.

"Most guys referred to me as 'Pops' and that's because I was the father figure," said Martin, who retired as the NFL record-holder for the most touchdowns (six) scored by a defensive lineman. "I was the elder statesman, generally the oldest guy on the team and they looked up to me as the chapel leader and as the captain."

But now, more than 20 years after helping lead his team to a Super Bowl victory, Martin, 54, is working towards an even greater effort. On Saturday, Martin will embark on a walk across the country in an effort to raise $10 million for medical care for the first responders who served New York City and the nation through their heroic service in the aftermath of 9/11. Many of those 9/11 responders are sick with respiratory and other diseases that can cause permanent disability.

"The 9/11 responders are really true heroes in every sense of the word," Martin said. "When you put your life at risk to help others, when you go into a situation that's fraught with danger, when you expose yourself to a toxic environment, and then it seems that those people are not responded in kind, I think we should all analyze our own actions. And I did so. I said this is something that I should be able to do to help repay those heroes, first responders and rescue and recovery workers."
