ROME (AFP) — The trial in absentia of a US marine who shot dead a top Italian military intelligence officer in Iraq resumed in Rome on Thursday.
The trial, which began May 14, was adjourned on July 10 after the defence questioned Italy's jurisdiction in the case.
Specialist Mario Lozano is accused of "voluntary homicide" over the March 2005 shooting of Nicola Calipari near Baghdad airport.
Calipari is mourned in Italy as a national hero, and the case has strained relations between Washington and Rome.
The incident happened shortly after Calipari, the deputy director of military intelligence, obtained the release of left-wing journalist Giuliana Sgrena from kidnappers, who had held her for a month.
Sgrena was seriously wounded in the incident on Baghdad's notoriously dangerous airport road known as Route Irish.
