Craig Will Remain in Senate Until Judge Rules

EDINA, Minn., Sept. 26 — Senator Larry E. Craig of Idaho on Wednesday backed away from his earlier decision to resign on Sept. 30 and said he would await a judge’s ruling on a motion to reverse his guilty plea in an undercover sex sting. Mr. Craig, a Republican, made the announcement after a court hearing on the motion.

The senator, who had said he would step down on Sept. 30 if he was unable to clear his record, said in a statement that he would stay in the Senate while Judge Charles A. Porter Jr. weighed arguments made Wednesday in Hennepin County District Court.

“Today was a major step in the legal effort to clear my name,” Mr. Craig said in a statement after Judge Porter indicated he might not rule until late next week. “The court has not issued a ruling on my motion to withdraw my guilty plea. For now, I will continue my work in the United States Senate for Idaho.”

His announcement was a disappointment to Senate Republican leaders who had hoped Mr. Craig would surrender his seat in the aftermath of a case they consider an embarrassment. Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, would not discuss the case ...................

What Larry Craig Wants, No Judge or Jury Can Give

Sept. 28 (Bloomberg) -- If Minnesota judge Charles Porter Jr. does the expected, he will refuse to let Senator Larry Craig take back his guilty plea ......

At that point, Porter will have saved Craig from yet another of the senator's bizarre errors in judgment.

Compounding his previous errors, the Idaho Republican this week sent lawyers to persuade Porter to undo his guilty plea and let him go to trial. As Craig says, he wants ``to clear my name.''......

He means, of course, he wants to clear it of any link to homosexuality. He will have a hard time doing that because technically, officially, he isn't charged with homosexuality. ......

6. The Narrow Stall at the Heart of Craig's Widening Legal Fight
The Narrow Stall at the Heart of Craig's Widening Legal Fight
By Paul Kane | Sep 26, 2007
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/capitol-briefing/2007/09/craigs_narrow_restroom_stall_l.html

MINNEAPOLIS -- Let's say this much for the infamous restroom in the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport: It's got some pretty narrow stalls, barely 32 inches wide.

Capitol Briefing ... paid a visit Tuesday night to the men's restroom in the North Star Crossing section of the airport. ... to determine if there is any plausibility to Craig's version of events .... what did Capitol Briefing discover at 8:20 p.m. CDT last night in the stall where Craig's career essentially ended two-and-a-half months ago? Toilet paper, three different shreds of toilet paper scattered around the stall just waiting for some neat freak to come along and scoop them up. ......

In a damaging point to the senator's purported version of what happened on June 11, Craig told his arresting officer that he "regularly" used that particular restroom. It was a known spot for gay sexual encounters, according to airport officials, who discovered that restroom was being talked about in online bulletin board postings for men searching for sexual encounters. A summer-long sting on the restroom netted at least 40 arrests for lewd or disorderly conduct.

It's unclear why Craig was a regular at that restroom. ....

7. Roll Call editor says CREW didn't give him Craig story
Is this an actionable incident. I'd love to see CREW drag Tom into court!

DeLay's false smear of CREW unveiled:

Roll Call editor says CREW didn't give him Craig story
Nick Juliano - Sep 28, 2007

'No idea whatsoever' how DeLay got that idea, editor tells Raw Story

The Capitol Hill newsman who first learned of Larry Craig's arrest for frisky behavior in a Minneapolis restroom says the accusation that an ethics watchdog group leaked him the police report is completely untrue.

Former Republican Majority Leader Tom DeLay accused Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington of distributing Craig's sex-sting arrest report to distract from a scandal swirling around Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

"I can tell you categorically that CREW was not the source for our Larry Craig story," Josh Kurtz, who was first tipped off about the Idaho senator's arrest, told RAW STORY. Kurtz is political editor of Roll Call, the Capitol Hill newspaper that first reported Craig's arrest.

11. Today's Idaho Statesman: For Larry Craig, ‘for now’ might mean ‘until January 2009’
Dan Popkey - Idaho Statesman
Edition Date: 09/30/07

On Sept. 1, Sen. Larry Craig told Idaho and the world he intended to resign Sept. 30. That's today. Instead, Craig says he plans to stay "for now."

What does "for now" mean?

Craig has weathered pressure to quit, including a pending Senate ethics inquiry, shunning by national Republican leaders and the stripping of his senior status on committees, the key to his power.

Craig survived and returned to the Senate two weeks ago. Now, Idaho Republican leaders tell me they've come to believe Craig will likely complete his term in January 2009.

" ‘For now' is permanent," said one. "He ain't leaving."
