Propaganda: How the Media Molds Your Mind.
Public relations pioneer and Freud's nephew - Edward Bernays.

Years ago, Americans grabbed toast and coffee for breakfast. Public-relations pioneer Edward Bernays changed that. Bernays used his Uncle Sigmund Freud's ideas to help convince the public, among other things, that bacon and eggs was the true all-American breakfast. He took Freud's complex ideas on people's unconscious, psychological motivations and applied them to the new field of public relations.

24. or read it, or hear it, or are exposed to the effects it has had on
your neighbors, relatives etc.

It's more insidious than we realize I believe.

3. thank you and welcome to DU!
Regarding Edward Bernay's research, I'm surprised by how old it is but it still is so true. What is it that Bush says, "We gotta catapult the propaganda"?

5. Can you say mind control?

øpening from Bernays

"THE conscious and intelligent manipulation of the
organized habits and opinions of the masses is an
important element in democratic society. Those who
manipulate this unseen mechanism of society consti-
tute an invisible government which is the true ruling
power of our country.
We are governed, our minds are molded, our
tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men
we have never heard of. This is a logical result of
the way in which our democratic society is organized.
Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in
this manner if they are to live together as a smooth-
ly functioning society.
Our invisible governors are, in many cases, un-
aware of the identity of their fellow members in the
inner cabinet. "

most interesting read and will finish later

Clearing any hint of pinko out of the media in the 50s was not a fad.

8. Betty Crocker cake mix
When housewives failed to respond to the concept of a cake from a box, marketing researchers were puzzled. Bernays suggested that women felt guilty about baking a cake to which they had contributed so little, so the recipe was changed to require the addition of an egg.

10. This reminds me of Derren Brown.
He's an entertainer/magician that recently made his US debut on the Sci-Fi channel. One thing he does is post suggestions that influence his subjects. Here's a fascinating example (video):

-Another fruitful method is the "astroturf" tactic, which involves the creation of a carefully controlled, phony grassroots group to front for corporate interests. An example is the "National Smokers Alliance," created by PR giants Burson-Marsteller on behalf of Philip Morris. ...
-Worst of all are the outright fabrications. Some readers may recall the aftermath of Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait, when a teenage Kuwaiti girl told a Congressional committee a chilling tale of Iraqi soldiers killing babies in a hospital in Kuwait. Only much lager was the girl revealed as the daughter of Kuwait's ambassador to the US, and her testimony as a pack of lies scripted by PR giant Hill & Knowlton.

I'd like to read the original book "Propaganda" published in 1928 by Bernays but none of the libraries around here carry it.

Edited to add: But I just realized that the link you provided is a doc file of the book itself :dunce:

19. Things have only gotten worse.
Today's information environment IS propaganda. Ted Turner said that five companies control 90-percent of what Americans hear, see and read. That's a lot of power wielded by the few that make up Corporate McPravda.

"All propaganda has to be popular and has to adapt its spiritual level to the perception of the least intelligent of those towards whom it intends to direct itself."

- Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf

Then again, it may be, like government, we get the media we deserve.

PS: A most hearty welcome to DU, tailwind.

21. We need to take these principles and run with them. Anyone can have a voice today.
I took a graduate class in education technology and design, and an interesting aspect of history was revealed. Education technology and design has its birth professionally in the WWII era, when it was necessary to train millions of people rapidly. It really worked too.

Today, almost any person can create media and have wide distribution of their ideas. The Internet is a revolution in media distribution, and accessible electronics a revolution in media production. These together represent the possibility of overcoming propaganda with truth in a free marketplace of ideas. This process is in place already, with Bill Maher on YouTube, etc. Do your part. Create media, make YouTubes, post links, whatever you can. Be part of the revolution against propaganda.
