For a Democrat, Options in Iraq Could Be Few
Hopefuls Seen as Unlikely To Effect Rapid Change

In their debate Wednesday night in Hanover, N.H., none of the three top Democratic presidential
candidates would promise to have the U.S. military out of Iraq by January 2013 -- more than five
years from now.

"I think it would be irresponsible" to state that, said Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.).

"I cannot make that commitment," added former senator John Edwards of North Carolina.

And Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) put it simply when she outlined the dilemma that Democratic
presidential aspirants face on Iraq. "It is very difficult to know what we're going to be inheriting," the party's front-runner said.

-------------------------

I have a helpful contribution to all the Democratic candidates.

This thread ran on DU. We workekd through the essential questions to consider on withdrawal
form Iraq, prompt withdrawal. There was only one request, nobody was to mention a candidates name so
there'd be no sniping. Everybody agreed and it was a great discussion.

The two issues were:

1) Ask the Iraqis what they want and follow that act of self determination on their party.
We know that 80% of all Iraqis want us out really quick.

2) Ask the question, what's in the best interst of the troops and American people.
That answer was easy too.

So candidates, how about letting the Iraqis state a preference onour presence and when we leave.
You now what all the polls say - they want us out in max a year.

IRAQI SELF DETERMINATION - WHAT A CONCEPT:)
