a 'Listen Up' for the women of Nev.

Nevada Ranks #1 in Rate of Women Murdered by Men

There are just some things that you don't want to be number one at, like being the top state for women who are murdered by men.

But the gun toting state of Nevada, according to the Violence Policy Center of Washington D.C., earned that distinction based on an analysis of homicide statistics for 2005:

The Violence Policy Center (VPC) today released When Men Murder Women: An Analysis of 2005 Homicide Data. This annual report details national and state-by-state information on female homicides involving one female murder victim and one male offender.

The VPC releases the study each year to coincide with Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. In 2005, according to the most recent data available from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's unpublished Supplementary Homicide Report, 1,858 females were murdered by males in single victim/single offender incidents.

Where weapon use could be determined, firearms were the most common weapon used by males to murder females (887 of 1,713 homicides or 52 percent). Of these, 72 percent (637 of 887) were committed with handguns. In cases where it could be determined if the victim knew her offender, 62 percent of female homicide victims (976 of 1,574) were wives or intimate acquaintances of their killers,

By the way, you might want to know the states that joined Nevada in the dubious achievement rankings for women murdered by men. They are, according to the Violence Policy Center: Alaska, Louisiana, New Mexico, Mississippi, Arkansas, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, and Oklahoma.

lets say that again:

62 percent of female homicide victims (976 of 1,574) were wives or intimate acquaintances of their killers,

1. It sounds like the women of Nevada also need to be educated on looking for signs
of sexual abuse in their young daughters.

one would think from reading DU that if men had legal outlets for sex-for-money, that everything would be great and there would be LESS man-on-woman violence... :sarcasm:

that theory doesn't seem to be working out so well.

8. well of course
but wouldn't one think, based on many of the threads here of late, that the men of Nevada are more empowered because they have the legal right to purchase sex with a woman?

5. You know, sometimes it sucks to be a southerner.
The South really loses in any kind of statistics discussion. We are always highest in violence, lowest in education. You would think somebody would have figured out the connection by now.

6. A heads up for New Mexico, too.
But, given the current popularity of sexism on TV and even on DU, I would say it's just a wonder there isn't more of it.
