Why I am here
On DU that is.

1) I really appreciate having such a wide group of people gathering news together in 1 place. Even if I were to never post again, the sheer volume of news articles here is great.

2) To learn about things. What is going on in the world, politically, environmentally, socially, legally, etc.

3) To practice the fine art of sarcasm, snarking, etc. OK, I never said I was totally mature or sedate.

4) To be part of a larger worldwide community that cares about each other. For instance, what is going on with OMC right now. I am very pleased to see people sending such continual good wishes to someone who has been abrasive in style, and take heart from this.

Back when we had SuperIgnore, I tried it on 1 person with whom I'd rubbed words with several times, OMC. I got SuperIgnored back and, decided that SI wasn't worth it. OMC and I have communicated a couple times since, coming to an agreement between us. I disagree with some posters here, some passionately, but even some of them I like since they are good people with good hearts, just different ways of getting to the same place (humane people with world citizen sort of views).

Trolls now, that is another story and I am glad to see them go away as my time on earth is limited and I'd rather spend it in more profitable ways (though I do like poking them sometimes). The fighting, the nastiness, the attempts to predict What Will Be I see as just part of how people are in the world, and try to avoid them as much as possible (not entirely, because I am uppity).

Thank you DU and DUers for being here. I really appreciate you. Onward.

1. Well, glad to have you here and a kick for a fine thread
I think we need less flamewars and more love wars where we kiss and make up :)

What we need - a forgiveness thread where we all start over and have some beers together!

4. cheers to that
This is the most unique forum I've seen on the net. There is a remarkable diversity, so the extent that you think you have nothing but clashes with someone, but then we all fall under this umbrella of a common interest in saving our country. At various times I have been annoyed, sad, empathetic, apathetic, inspired and disgusted by posts here. The good gained is well worth it all.

5. Agree completely. I've taken up an unpopular cause lately - the establishment of Palestinian state
I know it's unpopular but I believe it is a matter of justice.

6. Trying to approach emotionally laden things unemotionally can be difficult.
Sometimes it is hard to separate out things like this, emotions, fears, etc, from what is and what could be and what perhaps should be.

13. As with every issue, there's two sides. I recently read a novel where an
American Jewish lawyer defended a Palestinian woman charged with assassinating the Israeli Prime Minister while he was on a trip to America.

The lawyer and woman had fallen in love while both were students at Harvard. She returned home and entered into the traditional marriage and was a proponent of Palestinian rights.

In researching the case, the lawyer went to Israel and Palestine and met with people on both sides. It was an eye opener to me, and as usual, one can identify and agree with aspects of both sides of the argument.

I would guess that those who disagree with you are still of the belief that we were raised on -- Israel: good. Palestine: bad. It's far more complex than that and I applaud your courage in taking a stand.

8. Stridently held opinion was supposed to be a late night 1-off.
Never meant that to happen, though my favorite post of all time came in it, #9, direct link:

11. I like your reaons
I think I am here for the same things and also to learn more to use in arguing with the right wingers. Though the pure use of logic usually works to undo their arguments. But here you can work your thoughts out and it helps express them when dealing with real opponents.

It also helps keep me informed. Somehow I find the interactive method better for learning than by just say passively reading a newspaper.

12. that too. I must say that my first "real" OPs were jumped on a lot.
I didn't phrase things right, used wrong terminology, wasn't clear. Being a noob and doing this, I ate a lot of crow, explained a lot, refined a lot. It has helped critical thinking skills for use with others.
