A Humble Plea For Rational And Civil Discourse
Can we please discuss our candidates like adults and not deify or crucify them or start disingenuous threads where they will be mocked...

Thanks for listening...

1. It's been a strange day on DU.
There has been a WHOLE lot of disruption. I'd suggest that you don't take posters too seriously today.

3. Ha
I once heard one poster on another board say to another poster "you either take this board too serious or not serious at all."

I'm still trying to get my head around it but I think it applies to today...

13. That's a bit simplistic.
The best way is to take it seriously but not at all seriously.

Works better that way.

5. Primary season at DU
is always a bloodbath.

Between trolls and zealous supporters of (fill in the blank), primary season is never pretty or conducive to civil discourse. At least this has been my (and others) observation of the climate at DU at such times to date.

6. I view blogs as a place where I can vent and rage
Edited on Sat Sep-29-07 09:14 PM by provis99
the way I don't in my normally polite life. So whats wrong with that? It allows me to bond with those who also secretly feel angry, and need an anonymous forum to vent, in a way they couldn't in a normal social setting. Sometimes, ranting and raving and loud opinion are the reason I like these boards...

It doesn't make us bad or obnoxious, just people who feel a human need to release emotions sometimes.

And lets face it, getting angry, even at ones own party, is a lot better than becoming politically apathetic.

11. You Can Vent All You Want
I was referring to threads that have no purpose other than to incite or disrupt. Look at the fastest growing thread on this page and see the responses...

9. You're obviously not familiar with The Rules Of Primary Season....
http://atrios.blogspot.com/2006_12_17_archive.html#116645724148144035

Some Notes on Primary Season

1) Your favorite candidate is the only one who can win.

2) Your favorite candidate is the only one who will truly get behind a progressive agenda.

3) Other candidates are part of some nefarious conspiracy to destroy your candidate.

4) Supporters of other candidates are motivated by groupthink.

5) Supporters of other candidates are operating in bad faith and arguing dishonestly.

6) "Powerful" bloggers shouldn't be "biased."

7) Primary season is the silliest season of all.

14. The rules are really good.
Civility, staying on topic, starting threads in the right forum, not calling members trolls..... Hmmmm.
