There Are A Lot Of Democratic Voters Like My Mom |
|
Edited on Sun Sep-30-07 09:34 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
She's eighty nine years old, god bless her... She has voted Democratic in every election since FDR beat Wendell Wilkie in 1940...Her first boyfriend was one of those "soft socialists" who would proselytize on street corners...He went on to become a comptroller in the Lindsay administration... She walked precincts with me in a baby carriage for John Kennedy in 1960...She took me to the front of a rope line in 1964 to shake Robert Kennedy's hand at a Rego Park, New York rally when he was running for senator of New York ...I am trying to channel that memory but it was so long ago...We eventually moved to Florida...She caucused for Ted Kennedy in 1980 at a Daytona Beach straw poll... I remember handing out Ted Kennedy pamphlets in Daytona Beach that year...We met Al and Tipper in 00...Tipper bent down to kiss my mom who is now in a wheel chair...We even met the dreaded Joe Lieberman... My mom was eighty two years old during the 00 election and was recovering from a colon resection but that didn't stop us from braving the oppressive October heat to see Al Gore, Joe Lieberman, and Bill Nelson campaigning at the Eola Bansdhell in Orlando, Florida...
I only post this because I see so many posts by folks stating that they don't know anybody who likes Hillary... My mom loves her... I'm not saying you should too... Nothing of the sort... But what I am saying is there are many folks who like Hillary...Maybe it's the residue of the Clinton years which look so good in comparison to what we have now...Maybe it's something else but I assure you there are a ton of folks who like her..
From the heart...

Hillary was right to court the people who have faith in traditional institutions and the mainstream media. They are the ones who will nominate her. In fact all the Democrats are doing pretty much the same thing, and it's working for them too. It looks like it will take another few generations for real change to occur.

4. As A General Observation |
|
As a general observation there are a lot of garden variety Democrats who will support Hillary... There are also a lot of Democratic leaning Indys who will support her...Given the disaffection with the GOP this makes her nomination and election more than a theoretical possibility...

She has her heart set on HRC or Obama winning.
Like you, I know many, many folk that are very pleased by the prospect of a HRC presidency

5. There are also a lot of Democratic supporters like my family |
|
My mother is seventy seven years old, a lifelong Democrat who can't stand Hillary, thinking that she is a corporate shill, phony and won't stop the war. My step father, eighty three a career Air Force pilot and lifelong Democrat feels the same way. My sister, active in women's rights and other areas thinks that Hillary is not the right choice at all. I've also many friends who won't be voting for her, either in the primaries or the general if she gets the nod. These aren't the whacked out left that Hillary supporters like to portray us as, these are ordinary, everyday, middle class Americans who have enough insight and intelligence to put together the facts about Hillary and make up their own mind.

I think it's safe to say that they'll all vote the democratic ticket come next year with the possible exception of my mom. She probably won't go to the polls if HRC is the candidate.

6. Please....give your Mom a HUGE hug from me.... |
|
....and tell her your story about her brought tears to my eyes. If my mom were alive, she would have been about the same age as your mom ~~ my mom would have turned 84 last August. My mom died 7 years ago this last July.
BTW: I dislike Hillary to the max...the absolute max and this is nothing new with me ~~ I disliked her when she was First Lady. I don't trust her and I see her as a phony. But more power to your mom for liking her.
Sweet story about your mom and thanks for posting it. :hi:

9. My Mom Would Like Just About Any Democrat |
|
My whole extended family, with a few exceptions ,are stalwart Democrats...My aunt lived in NY her entire life...She passed away at ninety eight on Mother's Day 05...She hated Rudy...My mom told her, innocently, a few years ago that she got a birthday card from the George Bush White House like all old folks do and my aunt said "I don't care about that bastard." LOL...

7. I was a poll worker in 1960. |
|
It was cold as hell in Maryland. I stood in front of the polling place handing out literature for Kennedy at the displeasure of the five or six republicans standing there. They PAID their workers, they had more. I might have froze but I had the last laugh, my guy won.

My family were always the decent kind of republicans, well most of them anyway. My two yuppie fundy middle sisters and their hubbies are the neocon type. :puke:
I registered as the first Democrat in 1976. :)

I,m 72, hubby 73 and we are also voting for her, maybe as older folks we have seen many more administrations at work. We firmly believe its time for a woman, as Sally Fields said " If the world was run by mothers there would be no god damn wars".

18. My grandmother is 84, first voted (for FDR) in 1944. She's a lifelong rural Democrat. |
|
Her lower body was partially crippled by a spinal cord infection in 1998 but her mind is still as good as ever and she likes talking about current events and especially politics (she calls * a hybrid of Hoover, Nixon, and Satan  ). She likes Obama, she says he reminds her of both FDR and JFK.

25. My dad's a staunch life long Democrat who voted for Reagan. |
|
People make mistakes. People are aware of it all. My mother is also interested in Clinton. I think I turned her on to the notion of corporatism. Her generation isn't as cynical as ours. We saw the damage that "nice old guy" Reagan did.
My mom takes every word of the New York Times as the gospel. It might be the best we've got, but I believe the candidates are being chosen for us by these large media outlets.
We can do better than Hillary. That's all I have to say. I guess I can say more. We could do worse. Much worse. But I like to think of big change. Not more of the same middle of the road.

and she wants HRC for president. She wants the Big Dog back in the WH. One of my girlfriends wants HRC because she thinks a womans' touch is needed in our domestic issues. Both of them are female Leos. Strong smart women. If HRC wins the Primary I will of course vote for her. I can't philosophically get over the DLC being so far to the right. It hurts my brain to think Republik lite.

BTW, The reply was not a "charater asssasination".
The post merely pointed out that certain Dems are sometimes fooled by a conservative in liberal clothing.
The poster also called the candidate a "Repuke-lite"...not your mom.
