Don Monkerud: Why mix war and apple pie?

The Santa Cruz County Fair was an event not to be missed. One of the last country fairs complete with livestock, concessions, school displays, arts, carnival rides and fattening food, it combines an agricultural past with a nascent future to provide a snapshot of the county.

Sept. 11, opening day at the fair, saw a burst of patriotism. The first 1,000 fair visitors received commemorative "Remember 9/11" pins and American flags flew everywhere from concessions to stages, baby strollers to T--shirts, booths to bunting. Apple--pie judging was under way and, as the sun descended, parents with children poured in through the gates.

Patriotism filled the air and people wore buttons supporting "our troops" and urging a vote for various Republican presidential candidates. Others thanked the military recruiters for "their sacrifice" Interested in their motives, I questioned a number of these people.

Responses indicated that Saddam Hussein was responsible for the destruction of the WTC and that the U.S. has to fight the terrorists in Iraq or "we will have to fight them here" The U.S. can't leave Iraq because "Muslims will follow us home" Even the military recruiters who served in Iraq claimed that the U.S. occupation of Iraq is necessary because of the 9/11 attacks.

Where do these people get their information? A Sentinel article on the same day said that six years after 9/11 one-third of the American public — 40 percent of Republicans and 27 percent of Democrats — believe Saddam Hussein was "personally involved" in the 9/11 attacks and was sheltering al-Qaida. Unable to find a logical basis for such a belief, the article speculated that this "is a reflection of what people want to believe" and that President Bush promotes this belief to justify the military occupation of Iraq.

6. and all those chuckleheads got their *information* from the MSM
Yep -- ALL of them pushed that meme till it was practically written in stone. Goebbels had it right.

And now some of them (MSM) actually have the cajones to call the American public stupid. Instead they should admit THEY helped cause the problem. The MEDIA.

9. How long can a country with purposely ignorant citizens last?
Seriously. "US Americans" have access to just about every media source in the world. We have a "free" internet (for now), and tons of cable networks and newspapers. I am REALLY concerned. How did we get to this point, and how long can this really go on before the ship sinks?

11. This must be the "All them A-Rabs are evil" demographic.
No time for a newspaper, never heard of the op-ed section, wouldn't watch Jim Lehrer if they were chained to a post and forced to.

12. thats still a lot of stupid.
what seems to be the case, as demonstrated by callers to talk shows, is that the less informed people are, the less connected with reality, the more they are sure they know the truth.

17. When I worked at Arby's
there was one person there who believed that. He was also quite obviously not very intelligent. He said something about wanting to invade Iraq because Iraq was the reason that the scene in Spiderman with the WTC had to be taken out. And apparently the first Spiderman was his favorite movie, which added extra reason to kill hundreds of thousands and now possibly a million people.

I hate humans.

22. If the Bush propaganda machine is able to pull this off just imagine...
...how easy it would be for the Republicans and the media to convince this group of idiots that the Dems wanted to "cut and run" from the people who attacked us on 9/11 next election.

I know damn well no matter who is elected next year (Dem or Repug) we are leaving Iraq soon thereafter. But you can't say that or the other side will take what you say and convince these fuckwits that you are surrendering to the terra-ists.

This is what our presidential candidates are up against.

23. Goebbels sure nailed it....
"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State."
Joseph Goebbels.

They basically state that Iraq was responsible for the 9/11 attacks. Those ads are still on DC television during newscasts.

the suicide attacks. It is pathetic that anyone believes that Saddam had anything to do with the 911 Attacks. We are in the middle of the Twilight Zone of morons.
