Mo Rocca resurrects his ... "Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton ... Who Needs Elections?" piece.

Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton ... Who Needs Elections?

Posted Sep 28th 2007 10:11AM by Mo Rocca
Filed under: George Bush, Mo's Videos, Hillary Clinton, Mo Rocca

Suddenly - and FINALLY - people are talking about the problem of presidential dynasties here in America. The possibility of Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton (up to 28 years of 2-family rule) is looming with Hillary on the rise. (Add to that 8 run-up years of Bush the Father as VP to Reagan.)

I hate to sound like a smarty pants. But why not? Here is a commentary I taped for CBS Sunday Morning a year and a half ago on this subject. (Hence the references to Jeb Bush as candidate.) Forgive the over-enunciation and the annoying billowy shirt. I was new on the job...

4. . . . the problem isn't time.

It's that two prominent families have dominated the office of President/VP in the last 20+ years and might continue to do so for the next 4, 8, 16+ years.

5. So you see the problems of the Bush administrations as like the Clinton administration?
One represents war, lies, bankrupting of our Treasury and total corruption of government . . ..

The other -- Clinton -- represents peace, surplus, a healthy economy --

8. You're going in circles: Would you object to the FDR "pattern" . . ..?????
Or would you have voted for Bill Clinton for a third term?

11. That would've depended on who was running against him in the primaries, of course.
Edited on Sun Sep-30-07 01:11 PM by Emit
But, for simplification to address your point, back then, yes, he probably would've easily garnered my vote.

But Bill is not Hillary.

And things have changed.

It's not the time factor; it's the pattern, IMO.

22. I think Rocca sums up my concerns here
"Even if you think the Clintons are personally beyond reproach, moral paragons ... aren't you the least bit bothered by the prospect of a two-family political system? Of this oligarchical double helix? Isn't this all slightly Un-American?"

17. Reagan wasn't Reagan either-- you know what I mean?
Edited on Sun Sep-30-07 02:31 PM by Marr
His rehabilitated legacy is the product of decades worth of far-right propaganda.

He was the same sort of out-of-touch dolt that Junior is, and the same bunch of people were running his government. If he could've gotten away with the things GW Bush has, he would've. He didn't have the massive right-wing propaganda apparatus the GOP currently has, and the scrimmage line was several yards further left back then. But he pushed just as hard and just as far as W, I'd say.

19. While I agree with a lot of what you said, I don't
remember raygun leaving with such high disapprovals. Or low approvals. Iran/Contra hurt his image, but it didn't pull him as far down as dumbya.

And while those of us on the left despised him the middle was more indifferent. dumbya doesn't inspire that yawn from the middle.

I also don't think he pushed as hard as dumbya. He at least gave the all important appearance of being a 'uniter' & playing well with Dems. (Appearances only, but for harried folks appearances count. And of course no 24//7 news cycles either.) dumbya doesn't even fake that he is willing to compromise.

20. Jeb Bush for President?
"Florida Gov. Jeb Bush says he wants to be president. Well that's good, somebody will have to pardon his brother." —David Letterman

"Rumor is that President Bush's brother, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, may run for president. Rumor is? According to Florida voting machines, he's already won." —Jay Leno

I hope you're right. Another Clinton is one thing, but another Bush? Yikes.

15. Bill and Hillary are related by marriage
and in my mind that's not a dynasty. Its a very unusual circumstance. They're two different people, and honestly, I think she's better because of him. I'm not sure if it works the other way, but I'm glad Hillary has Bill behind her if she's going into the presidency.

16. Thank you for pointing that out
This "Clinton dynasty" bullshit drives me batshit crazy. She is not his daughter or his sister, for chrissakes, she's the former first lady and a current senator.

And as for "prominent families"? Please. The Bush family is an elite, crime family going back generations. The Clintons are one poor kid from Arkansas who made good, and the woman who married him.
