So WHEN will Thompson officially drop out of the Repub Nomination Race???
After George Will totally eviscerated Thompson in just one column, it became clear that the support of the RW conservative crowd for Thompson would totally disappear once he became an announced candidate.

In short order, Thompson managed to give completely different recollections of his actions and votes as a member of Congress, which were easily disproved by available records.

Then Thompson appeared at a Florida fundraiser and admitted it was the first he had heard that there might be oil in the Everglades which might be drilled.

With his wife Jeri at the helm of the campaign, having run off experienced campaign strategists, we can expect even more amazing tales from this campaign trail.

So when do you think THompson will drop out of the race? (He only raised $7mil in his first official quarter as a candidate).

IMHO I do not think he will make it to the first Repub Primary.

4. He's leading in many national polls--too early to count him out.
However, doesn't look like he will be a strong enough challenger to take down Rudy, or squash Mittens.

A Rocky Rollout For Thompson

By George F. Will
Thursday, September 13, 2007; Page A19

"Fred Thompson's plunge into the presidential pool -- more belly-flop than swan dive -- was the strangest product launch since that of New Coke in 1985. Then, the question was: Is this product necessary? A similar question stumped Thompson the day he plunged.

Sean Hannity, who is no Torquemada conducting inquisitions of conservatives, asked Thompson: "When you look at the other current crop of candidates -- Republicans -- where is the distinction between your positions and what you view as theirs?" Thompson replied: "Well, to tell you the truth, I haven't spent a whole lot of time going into the details of their positions."

He also is unfamiliar with the details of his own positions. Consider his confusion the next day when talk radio host Laura Ingraham asked him about something he ardently supported -- the McCain-Feingold expansion of government regulation of political speech. His rambling, incoherent explanation was just clear enough to be alarming about what he believes, misremembers and does not know.

Thompson said he had advocated McCain-Feingold to prevent, among other things, corporations and labor unions from "giving large sums of money to individual politicians." But corporate and union contributions to individual candidates were outlawed in 1907 and 1947, respectively."

13. No--If Newt or Hagel didn't run, I really can't see anyone else getting in at this point. I think
the nominee will be Rudy or Mittens.

15. Assuming the election is legitimate, Repubs have no chance with present slate of candidates...
THis country is united on one thing --they want this war ended, and ended NOW.

Neither Giuliani nor Romney has endorsed ending the war now.

Even as unhappy as voters are with Dems in Congress not ending the war after the 2006 election, the people will not vote for a continuation of the war by voting for the Repub candidate.

Even a cursory review of his time in Congress seems to include many 'circumstances' which were well known as the basis for the nickname 'Tennessee Stud'.

Maybe, I am isolated due to my location, but I have found that Thompson is very popular in TN. I am glad to hear that this is not the case elsewhere!

23. Name one experienced political strategist who believes Thompson has a chance...
He may be near the top of current polling among Repubs, but there are reasons for that.

So far most people have not heard him speak, know little about him and his positions, and he has not had to come out on one side or the other of issues that will surely alienate some group of Repubs.

Give him time. Let him appear at a debate or two, and watch Repubs get that glazed over puzzled look on their faces.

Another reason, there are no strong Repubs running. He is the unknown quantity right now. As soon as he opens his mouth, all uncertainty will be gone.

Bush family hedges its bets for 2008
By Alexander Bolton
March 26, 2007

Much of Jeb’s inner circle has picked Romney. The list includes Sally Bradshaw, who served as Gov. Bush’s campaign manager in 1994 and 1998 and as his first gubernatorial chief of staff; Ann Herberger, who was the governor’s campaign finance director; and Mandy Fletcher, who recently headed Bush’s think tank, Foundation for Florida’s Future, and worked on his reelection. In addition, Alan Philp, Bush’s former policy director, is coordinating policy and issues for Romney.

Jeb Bush’s former lieutenant governor Toni Jennings, Al Cardenas, who served as Florida GOP chairman under Jeb, David Griffin, who headed Jeb’s second -term transition office and was the Florida Lottery Secretary, Sherri McVay, executive director of Jeb’s statewide advocacy council, and Kristy Campbell, the former governor’s press secretary, are all playing roles in Romney’s campaign.

26. Today Thompson says he believes Saddam had WMDs before we attacked....
... shows how out of touch he is with the facts, and how far behind the thinking of the public to try and resurrect that 'old line.'

Just wait until people get to hear his other ideas.

I have heard him speak twice on CSPAN covered events, both times a disaster.
