the importance of neckties

a woman caller on Wash. Journal this morning said that we couldn't believe what Ahmadinejad said because he didn't wear a tie. if he had worn one then we might believe him.

it's pitiful how ignorant many americans are.

did one of the neo con radio mouths talk about him not wearing a tie, I wonder.

And all the little sheep believed him each and every time.

2. So a leader of a country gets on stage and says, "We have no homosexuals in Iran"
and the US caller who wants to see the tie is the ignorant one.

Right. I bet the caller was making a winking face on the phone too...:eyes:

10. And yet he didn't have the shame not to lie directly into the camera...
I think you are defending the indefensible.

Of course he didn't believe his own lie. And he knew we would not either. That he said it anyway is a sign of arrogance and contempt, not cunning. Declaring the world conforms to your ideology, then grinning while hanging any counter-examples is not especially nuanced behavior.

16. Pavlov ....
Seems the RW has been successful in associating the very word/name Ahmadinejad with a salivating reflexive response. I guess if they manage to get another 20 or 30% to reflexively respond this way then war with Iran is inevitable... I for one do not intend to buy into yet another Bush* created boogie man. Yeh, Ahmadinejad is a raging bigoted idiot, but we are only creating a support base for him in Iran (where he is NOT popular) by our reactions. The world is full of bigoted asshole leaders--many are cruel despots. SOme are very unpredictable, yet really could anhilate the world with nuclear or bioweapons. Yet, it seems they are not as convenient for the Pavlovian "boogie man" response....:eyes:

17. The irony of your post is that NONE of that was occasioned by either the caller's comment
or my response.

Rail against war with Iran, but use cogent points. Not some inanity spouted by a CSPAN caller.

26. LOL. Now criticism of Iran is Bad. Unless the chickenhawk in question is Hillary?
At least you're inconsistent!

Hillary Clinton voted in favor of the Kyl-Lieberman amendment to press the army toward war with Iran. This was an important step, for her, and a vote as closely considered as her vote to authorize the bombing and occupation of Iraq.

3. The 'national costume' over there is a Persianized suit. It has a shirt that
doesn't require a necktie. In fact, you can't wear one with that particular shirt.

Sometimes, fellahs wear the western shirts, and some of them go for the ties. But they're the minority.

The guy's an asshole, but the lack of a tie isn't relevant to that fact. Nor is the 'more Islamic' facial fur, either.

Well, as to bow ties (to change the subject slightly), the wearer who I would never disbelieve is former Boston Globe reporter/columnist (and treasure), Tom Oliphant. By contrast, the wearer I could never believe is (of course) Tucker Carlson.

So, I'm guessing the tie really does NOT make the man, eh?

That the more I have to wear ties, the more unhappy I am with my job.

Damn good thing I only "have to" wear a tie now 2-3 times per year :)

(public speaking/awards presentations)

And those ties are silly, colorful, cartoonish ties at that!

My goal = a zero tie life.

I wonder sometimes who decided that a brightly-colored piece of fabric tightly fastened about the throat is a symbol of authority, wisdom and leadership.

31. I like this line of thought on suits and ties...
From The Jargon File

suit: n.

1. Ugly and uncomfortable ‘business clothing’ often worn by non-hackers. Invariably worn with a ‘tie’, a strangulation device that partially cuts off the blood supply to the brain. It is thought that this explains much about the behavior of suit-wearers. Compare droid.

2. A person who habitually wears suits, as distinct from a techie or hacker. See pointy-haired, burble, management, Stupids, SNAFU principle, PHB, and brain-damaged.

36. Feminist View of Ties?
Edited on Mon Oct-01-07 05:43 PM by Mike03
My ex-wife took a class in Feminism, and she told me that one theory about neck ties is that their symbolic significance, either consciously or subconsciously, is that they point towards the male genitalia, like an arrow. On most men, hair also grows that way, a line from the abdomen down to the pubic bone. This class was taught at a very well regarded private university, by the way. I was more convinced by the hair aspect than the tie aspect, but I toss this in for what it's worth.

39. I have a story for you
Where I worked the sales manager told one of the sales guys, "Don't speak to me until you put on a tie."

And, then another day during a conference room meeting:

MGR: "Where's your tie"

Guy: "I forgot to put it on."

MGR: "Next time wear it, or don't come to the meeting."
