2. watched a show about spam a few weeks ago
They had a section about the Nigerian scam. Seems it's a variation of something called the "Spanish prisoner" which started over 600 years ago.

The more things change...

5. One of my favorite websites...
Edited on Mon Oct-01-07 07:34 PM by Kingshakabobo
One of my favorite "scambaits":::

http://www.419eater.com/html/bigman.htm

TITLE: Busted!
SCAMMER NAME: Ony Obo
SCAMMER LOCATION: Lagos, Nigeria
SCAMBAITER: Shiver Metimbers

For a slight change, we have a scammer trying to ply his trade via a different routine. This time it's a repentant dying man, wanting to distribute his millions to charity. Of course, were someone to reply to this email wanting to help, the victim would have course pay fictitious "fees" to a fake barrister that the scammer would hire to handle the cash transfer.

We've had carvings and artwork from scammers on quite a few occasions now, and I think it's time to move on to other ways to cause misery for these thieves, so for my final attempt at getting artwork out of a scammer I'll try for something a little different.

It all starts way back near the end of July 2006...

Subject: HELP ME TO SPREAD GOODNESS

Hello my friend,

Hope this day finds you well?, I am Ony Obo a merchant in Nigeria, I have been diagnosed with Esophageal cancer, It has defiled all forms of medical treatment, and right now I have only about a few months to live, according to medical experts.

I have not particularly lived my life so well, as I never really cared for anyone (not even myself) but my business. Though I am very rich, I was never generous,I was always hostile to people and only focused on my business as that was the only thing I cared for. But now I regret all this as I now know that there is more to life than just wanting to have or make all the money in the world.

much more at the link...

4. Like He's Given You An Incentive?
You know, even those scam letters that go to some trouble to spin a yarn always impressed me with their underestimation of American intelligence (or overestimation of our courtesy?).

It reminds me of the letters (Mrs.) Reverend Moon sent out to a number of politicians prior to a U.S. visit circa 2000. The first one in the series was aggressive enough, but when you continually failed to reply, you received increasingly hostile demands for - get this - a "letter of welcome."

7. Here is one from the L.A. Times.
As I recall from the Journalism class I took, it was in the '50s and garnered $20,000 for the advertiser.

"LAST CHANCE! to send me your used $1 Bills. PO Box..."

No laws broken, no deceptive advertising, just a statement.
