BURMA RESOURCES THREAD: News, Actions and More!
Edited on Mon Oct-01-07 07:19 PM by emlev
I've compiled this thread to help keep the info and links about the current situation in Burma easy to find in one place. If you want to add to this, please take a moment to see how it's organized.

Categories of information are posted as replies to the OP (in caps).
Resources under each category are posted as replies to the category.
Comments about the resources are invited to be posted as replies to the resource.

Note about posting news updates:
In an effort to keep this thread as usable as possible with resources that will remain helpful, I've decided not to post news updates here. However, I invite you to link to news about Burma in as a response to the post below called "NEWS UPDATES and OTHER HELPFUL DU THREADS."

Disclaimer:
I don't vouch for the political position or accuracy of any of the resources presented here. Basically I've gathered stuff people have posted on other threads and put it together in one place. I hope it's useful and that it will encourage you to take action!
If you want to email this thread to people who are not DU members, consider emailing the "printer-friendly format" copied into an email.

I invite you to link to this thread at the bottom of any new thread on Burma!

19. Join or organize a vigil in your town or city
We have posted a calendar of vigils on the BPF website. There are currently events scheduled in New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington DC, and Milan (Italy). We are updating the list regularly, so please keep checking it. Check with your local BPF chapter to see if they are planning a vigil.

If you plan a vigil, we are encouraging people to use these common elements:

* Silent vigil, and hold to principles of nonviolence in support of the monks and nuns. If you do chant, use the Metta Sutta, as this is the chant the monks and nuns of Burma have been praying. Click here for a copy of the Metta Sutta that you can print and distribute to people at your vigil. Please avoid protest chants.

* Wear red or maroon.

* Bring a BPF banner, if you have one.

23. Help get video equipment into Burma
Edited on Mon Oct-01-07 07:14 PM by emlev
From Buddhist Peace Fellowship Website
From BPF board member Jesse Maceo Vega-Frey:

In lieu of an actual physical international presence on the ground in Burma, one of the best ways we have to supporting the effort of the Burmese people is to make sure these lines of communication to the outside world stay open and up-to-date.

We are trying to find a way to gather photographic, video and transmission equipment and get it into Burma through contacts in Thailand. We would appreciate your help by sending any extra equipment of this nature that you may have to our office in North Carolina, where they will be compiled and sent as quickly as possible to the appropriate people. This can be old, used and even out-dated equipment--as long as it works and you are willing to part ways with it.

If you do not have equipment of this nature but would like to help you can also send donations to help pay for additional equipment and shipping charges. Please make checks payable to stone circles with “Burma video equipment” in the memo line.

Please send all resources to:

by layperson just before 12 noon as main meal of the day) from the
military junta. The local population approached these detention
centres to offer food and they have been turned away by the
authorities. Technically, the monks are unintentionally on huger
strike.

We contacted the International Red Cross's (ICRC) office and UNHCR in
Rangoon. The UN's office refused to help and ICRC bucked the
responsibility on their head office in Geneva.

Please write or Phone to ICRC, e-mail Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister
Gordon Brown. Every governments contribute funds in the running of
the UN bodies and therefore you persuade the PM and the Foreign
Secretary to pressure the UN organisations to take action on or least
ask them if they provide value for money service to the world
humanity.

Please be professional when writing to PM Gordon Brown and Secreatarty
. You can thank the British Government for their efforts so on Burma
and persuade them succinctly with sound arguments. Contact details

Groups Struggle to Tally Myanmar's Dead

Monday October 1, 2007 7:01 PM

By MICHAEL CASEY

Associated Press Writer

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - One hundred shot dead outside a Myanmar school. Activists burned alive at government crematoriums. Buddhist monks floating face down in rivers.

After last week's brutal crackdown by the military, horror stories are filling Myanmar blogs and dissident sites. But the tight security of the repressive regime makes it impossible to verify just how many people are dead, detained or missing.

``There are huge difficulties. It's a closed police state,'' said David Mathieson, a consultant with Human Rights Watch in Thailand. ``Many of the witnesses have been arrested and are being held in areas we don't have access to. Other eyewitness are too afraid.''

Authorities have acknowledged that government troops shot dead nine demonstrators and a Japanese cameraman in Yangon. But witness accounts range from several dozen deaths to as many as 200.

``We do believe the death toll is higher than acknowledged by the government,'' Shari Villarosa, the top U.S. diplomat in Myanmar, told The Associated Press Monday. ``We are doing our best to get more precise, more detailed information, not only in terms of deaths but also arrests.''

Villarosa said her staff had visited up to 15 monasteries around Yangon and every single one was empty. She put the number of arrested demonstrators - monks and civilians - in the thousands.

138. Commentary: A Storm That Won't Be Stilled
By Naomi Mann/Rangoon
October 6, 2007

Just a few months ago, Rangoon experienced a day of freak weather. Whirlwinds ripped through several townships in the city leaving untold damage in their angry wake. A display of emotion conspicuously at odds with anything I was used to seeing and tantalizingly portentous, it resurfaced last week in human form.

The grim statistics from these protests can always be disputed, yet like a whirlwind, the protestors are undoubtedly of one force—one body with many limbs.

From a window high above the wide street, I watched thousands of maroon-clad figures walking, as though in silent meditation, towards a smoking pagoda. On either side, ordinary citizens held hands, forming a human chain to protect THEIR monks.

I could hear many chants. There was the chant of ‘Doh ayei’ (‘our cause’) and there was the monks’ chant of metta sutta, or ‘loving kindness.’ Finally, there was the chant of democracy, rarely whispered in modern times.

Where, I wondered, was their loving kindness leading them? Most likely into the guns and bayonets of their brothers in the army...

107. I understand...spreading the word can help more than you'll know
A few things I've learned:

When the world is a wreck, *nothing* we do ever feels like enough. We must do what we can and do our best to accept our limits, while also looking for opportunities to do more.

We rarely know the true effects of our actions. I know of situations where somebody sending one email or making one phone call has set off a chain of events that has had huge effects. Really.

Thank you for caring and for doing what you're able to do!

It's marked with asterisks in the subject line to make it easy to find.

I think the formatting comes out better, and the presentation is changed a bit so it'll make sense as an email.

Thanks, NYC, for your work on this!

Myanmar Junta Admits Mass Arrests
By THOMAS FULLER - Oct 5, 2007
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/05/world/asia/05myanmar.html?ref=asia

BANGKOK, Oct. 4 — For the first time, Myanmar’s military rulers late Thursday acknowledged mass detentions in their brutal crackdown on protesters, saying that about 1,400 people were being held. They also made a heavily qualified offer to meet with the pro-democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

The junta offered to hold talks with Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi, but only if she abandoned her attitude of “confrontation” and repealed her call for foreign sanctions against the country. The announcement was made on the nightly radio and television newscasts, which are monitored by news agencies.

State news media said that during a meeting in Myanmar this week, Senior Gen. Than Shwe, the leader of the junta, told Ibrahim Gambari, the United Nations envoy, that Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi “has called for confrontation, utter devastation, economic sanctions and all other sanctions.”

If she “announces publicly she has given up these four things, he would hold direct talks” with her, General Than Shwe told Mr. Gambari, according to Myanmar media. ............

I'm new to this type of meditation for today's cause,
but it seems logical to try and emulate these young men,
who seem to be meditating while walking. Incredible ones,
aren't they? Peace begins within, indeed.
