Proud to be an ...... Michiganian, Californian, New Yorker etc etc.....
I visited Montreal last weekend, and for the first time in my life, "American" was not something I wanted to claim when someone asked me where I was from. When the question was asked, I quickly responded Michigan or Detroit. That arrogant swagger that had historically come with being "American"? :nuke:

Watching the Canadian news, the top stories included the Canadian loonie's parity with the American dollar, a huge budget surplus for the Canadian government, and how the disastrous U.S. housing market had not affected Canada's booming housing market. Our northern neighbor was America lite no more, but its own powerful entity, minus foolish wars of choice, wacked-out members of the religious right and disastrous fiscal policies.

So when a Montrealer would ask me where I was from, I responded "Michigan," hoping to soften the blow of being an American. And more often than not, the response would be "Michigan voted for John Kerry, right?" I guess it worked.

PROUD TO BE A NORTH AMERICAN! :)

I wouldn't tell people I was from Texas when I was there....and the friends there that did know repeatedly said stuff like "you don't act/sound like you're from Texas" as though it was a compliment....

2. Maybe your problem
was the arrogant swagger in the first place.

4. I think the poster was being self-deprecating.
People with arrogant swaggers generally don't describe themselves as having an arrogant swagger.

5. Not me so much....
That was a generic statement based on my observations of lots of American travelers in other countries.

3. Glad to be from the left coast.
I'd hate to have to say I'm from Texas!
