Lawmaker shows nude photo to students
The Associated Press

NORWALK, Ohio --A state legislator surprised a high school class when the computer he was using projected a photo of a nude woman during a lecture on how a bill becomes a law.

State Rep. Matthew Barrett was giving a civics lesson Tuesday when he inserted a data memory stick into the school computer and the projected image of a topless woman appeared instead of the graphics presentation he had downloaded.
----------------------

Barrett said there were a few snickers from the approximately 20 students in the senior government class at Norwalk High School when the image appeared. He said he immediately pulled the memory stick out of the computer.

...the school's technology director determined the stick had a directory of nude images in addition to Barrett's presentation on civics lessons.

"I have no idea where these came from," the Democrat said.

flash some nude images on the screen. The first time he said, "Now that I have your attention again..."

10. well, for one thing its not the same thing
Vitter is a hypocrite who went to a prostitute yet supported abstinance only and was against equal marriage rights.

Craig was arrested attempting to solicit a prostitute and is also a hypocrite who is against equal rights.

This guy accidentally showed a naked photo to high school kids, which is wrong but not the same thing really. For one thing, by high school most people have seen a naked body. For another, it may have truly been an accident, although it's a rather stupid one if so. And it was the wording that sucked, honestly: they could have just put a (D) next to his name.

14. Oh please...don't lump this guy in with the likes of Craig and Vitter.
Edited on Wed Oct-03-07 09:50 AM by KzooDem
First of all, I want to go on record to say I beleive it was correct to identify the official as a Democrat. Elected officials are always identified by party in the press. This happened to be a Democrat who did a stupid thing and then said a stupid thing to cover up the stupid thing he did. But it's just that: a STUPID THING.

I don't believe the article was trying to make it out to be anything more than it was: a stupid thing. So why do you have the compunction to lump this somewhat benign incident with the likes of Vitter and Craig, who seriously breached any code of ethics, and hypocritically held themselves as somehow above that code of ethics by way of their two-faced, self-serving political agendas?

Riddle me THAT one, Batman, though I don't expect we'll hear a rationale out of you.

The point is, whether he was identified with a "D" next to his name or "the Democrat said", its not like people aren't going to know he's not a Democrat. Is it sloppy journalism? Perhaps, but to get overly upset that the article stated "the Democrat said" is just negative energy I don't intend to expend.

What I find most disturbing surrounding this issue is that the police seized the computer and memory stick. Just what potential crime was committed here? That's the thing that has my hackles up.

38. I'm not overly upset, just thought the wording sucked
in my opinion, by using his party instead of his name, it implies that Democrats are all slimeball sex pervs. Notice that when a Republican gets in trouble they use their name and tend to not say "the Republican said" assuming they even identify the party correctly in the first place (see: Mark Foley).

I'm not upset though, just sick of bad journalism.

Btw - this is potentially exposing minors to obscene materials, as far as potential crimes.

12. I hate to admit it, but a mousy little thing used to be the morning library computer lab opener and
once a group of us put the starting screensaver at closing time up of a huge erect penis. . .
Just to get her reaction when she opened the lab the next morning. She calmly went to the first when she turned on the computer and moved the mouse and saw the image. She sat down and stared for about a minute, then changed the screensaver to the default. Then she calmly did the same for the other two dozen or so, without a blink!
That was when I decided I wanted to be a librarian . . .
Such coolness under fire was admirable in the extreme. Of course I lament being such a smartass now, but then, oh a different tune by far. . .

18. Here's the most disturbing part of this incident:
"Police interviewed Barrett and school officials and seized the data memory stick and the computer to determine where the image came from, a state highway patrol spokesman said."

Is that really necessary?? It doesn't sound like it was kiddie porn. The article said it was an image of a nude woman. So some kids were exposed to a (gasp) naked woman for what probably amounted to less than 30 seconds. I somehow doubt they will be scarred for life.

I find it kind of fishy that the guys is saying he has no idea where the images came from. But still, no matter how I slice it and dice it, I don't see where any type of crime was committed, so why is the police seizing the computer and the memory stick?

It's obvious there's been a crime. If he didn't put those images there, someone must have broken into his office, stolen it, put the image on there, and broken back in to replace it. He did the right thing to go after them! ;)

Teacher Granted New Trial in Porn Pop-Up Case
By Ryan Singel EmailJune 06, 2007 | 1:20:18 PMCategories: Crime

A judge has granted a new trial to Julie Amero, a former substitute teacher in Norwich, Connecticut who was convicted in January on four felony counts of risking injury to minors after she was unable to prevent pornographic pop-ups from showing up on a computer in a classroom in 2004.

The city's prosecutors did not oppose the motion for a new trial, raising the possibility that Amero will not be tried again.

The opportunity for a new day in court marks a reversal in fortune for Amero who faced sentencing this week that could have landed her in jail for forty years. Amero was convicted of endangering children after several students saw pornographic thumbnails on a computer screen.

Despite testimony that the monitor did not face the children, that Amero asked for help from other teachers and a vice principal, and that the schools IT administrator allowed the school's filtering software to expire, Amero was found guilty.

for a staffer to undermine a politician. Just change the filename and icon and say, "Your report's all ready, sir!" To me, this is at least as likely as his being such a total wally that A. he stored porn in the same directory as his work and B. he thought a jpeg was his ppt.

If I was in such a hotseat job no one but me would ever touch my computer.

In addition to the unintentional humor there, I'm trying to figure out how the police got involved and under what bizarre logic they were able to take the memory stick (unless the legislator offered it to them). Unless is was suspected to be kiddie porn, I don't believe there's a law against having nude images on your computer.
