that the soldier who was the target of Limbaugh's ire didn't even make it through boot camp. Is this true? Does it matter? Link? Please :) I'd like to have a decent rebuttal.

On edit: Thanks, everybody. I've read the links you provided and from what I can see, my friend is wrong and you can be sure I will inform him of his error.

His point is that Limpballs was talking about a certain kind of "soldier" that is, somebody who isn't really a soldier at all and therefore should not claim to be one.

Limbaugh made a generic remark. Long after the first remark he started talking about the one soldier. Media matters should still have a recording of limbaughs remarks.

Edited on Wed Oct-03-07 11:15 AM by TheUniverse
He tried to make it look like he was referring to "Jesse MacBeth," an actual phoney soldier who claimed he commited war crimes in Iraq but actually never served. He actually said Jesse MacBeth later in the show. At first I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but then he referred to Jack Murtha as a phony soldier http://mediamatters.org/items/200709280011

And then he called an Iraqi Veterans anti war group "suicide bombers."

http://mediamatters.org/items/200710020014

I think now there is no doubt where he stands.

21. Limbaugh stated clearly and openly that soldiers who don't back the war are "phony soldiers"
Edited on Wed Oct-03-07 11:20 AM by Buzz Clik
In the context of his original comments, he was talking about dissenting soldiers in general. In his typical fashion, he has subsequently tried to suggest that "hateful liberals" have distorted his comments and took them out of context.

No way.

Limbaugh eventually turned his attention to one soldier who was, indeed, a phony. But Limbaugh's long-winded complaints are a classic case of covering his enormous ass.

They're buying Rush's spin, and this has now become standard RW talking points. The fact is, he was agreeing with a caller who was referring to anti-war soldiers as "phony soldiers". He was NOT singling out Jesse Macbeth, or the people who were arrested for filing for bogus Veteran's benefits.

33. He is trying to cover for his own inept words...
Basically, he was stating that those who did not agree w/the war are "phony soldiers". He used the one individual as a "sure fire" way to press his point. But he blew it. He had the show edited that went to AFR, and he is backpedaling and seriously defensive at this point.

He blew it, and he knows it. From what I have been told, he spent almost his entire 3 hours yesterday on this point, which tells me he knows he's in deep stuff.

The truth of the matter is, the individual cited had made it through 44 days of Basic Training before being discharged; he lied about being a Ranger or a Corporal, as well as service in Iraq. Limbaugh took it further, implying that anyone in uniform that did not agree w/the administration, (or him), was a "phony soldier".

Since Limbaugh never served, I find it somewhat disgusting that he could say things like that.

35. You could start that that one soldier (not plural) is not at issue
The transcript and its context are uneqivocally clear. Rush was talking about soldiers, not one soldier, i.e. Jesse McBeth, who did not come up in Rush's dialogue that day until after the "phony soldier" remark. The context was Rush was talking with a caller about how liberals prop up "phony soldiers" to argue against the war. That clearly implies Rush was saying liberals are using the soldiers, and that any disenting soldiers are too dumb to have their own opinion and are simply naive and allow themselves to be used, and thus they are not honorable enough to be authentic soldiers and instead deserve to be called "phony soldiers." That is beyond a doubt what Rush was saying.

Jesse McBeth has nada to do with any of this. I and most other people on the left had never heard of Jesse McBeth until Rush Limbaugh brought this up.

37. To summarize the situation: Rush had a caller, a soldier, who was against the war. Rush made a
statement about "phony soldiers" in response to this soldier's call which was clearly a reference to soldiers who thought as this soldier did, i.e. who were not on the Bush/Rush "program", meaning that any soldier who thought this way was not a true or real soldier, or that they were actually phony meaning they were only pretending to be a soldier, because no actual soldier could possibly think this way.

Having been called on this outrageous statement, Rush has since tried to falsify and distort the matter saying he was only referring to Jesse MacBeth, who was in fact a "phony" soldier (i.e. he didn't serve), but examination of the record, like at the mediamatters links in this thread, clearly show that he (Rush) is lying and simply trying to cover his ass.

43. the Limp one clearly was talking about ALL and ANY soldiers
who do not support the bush cabal's military agenda.

This includes, but is not limited to, the guy who was a fraud. He directed his "phony" accusation at *soldiers*, plural, not *soldier*, singular, during a discussion with a caller of the large number of soldiers in general who are quoted in the media as being critical of the "mission" in Iraq. The caller and Limpballs agreed that there were many of these quoted in the media, but that they did not represent the true feelings of our military. Drugboy said that all these critics are "phony soldiers."

Later, he edited out the part of the call that made it clear they were talking about many such critics and re-aired a selected quote out of context (in which he still said *soldiers*, plural, BTW). His army of idiots use the edited version to try to make the case that he was talking only about the one fraud.

In the past, he has used this same "phony" accusation against Kerry, Murtha, Cleland, the Iraq Veterans for Peace and other current and former veterans who are critics of the neocon agenda. It is a long-term and consistent pattern for him. He was just stupid enough to do it while the "Betray Us" controversy was focusing on media attacks on members of the military.

Was the freeper in your OP your repuke boyfriend?

We were talking about how both sides are capable of bending the truth to fit their respective needs, and he brought up this example. He was not any better informed than I am, but had listened to - ugh - Glenn Beck's take on the issue. My method with the guy is not to argue but to present him with the "alternative" facts and let him make up his own mind. So far, he's as much a democrat as you and me, but he doesn't know it & he gets his information from the wrong sources. He's bright enough not to respond well to "Well, Rush was no soldier" which is true but rather irrelevant.

45. In determining the level of patriotism a person has what matters to Rush
Isn't whether a person put on the uniform. It isn't if that person has served honorably. It isn't a matter of where or in what capacity that person served.

What matters to Rush and his apologists is whether or not that person is a Republican. It's nothing short of a political loyalty test for members of our armed services.

When a person joins the army, he doesn't take an oath to serve George Bush; he doesn't take an oath to serve the interests of the Republican party. He takes an oath to protect & defend the Constitution from all enemies foreign & domestic. Someone who puts a political party ahead of his country is an enemy of that country.
