6. Hahaha... NO FAIR!
I was gonna use the family name to run for office legitimately -- and now CC's gone and spoiled my plans with SATIRE?!?!?!?

It's still funny, though. :)

7. In the mid- 1970s I saw a "Goldwater/Miller" Poster
Edited on Mon Oct-01-07 05:49 PM by happyslug
It has drawn on one of the buildings in Downtown Pittsburgh. I saw it from the Liberty Bridge at 3:00 AM. It was about a 10 story building with 1/3 of the building still having this HUGE Goldwater/Miller Sign. The lighting was just right them to bring out the painted sign (It was faded badly by the time I saw it, but still up, it may still be up all I know). It was blocked0 by other building's shadows during daylight so you could not make it out, but at 3:00 AM the lighting was just right.

And if you are wondering what I was doing in Downtown Pittsburgh at 3:00 AM, I was in High School (later Collage), but my father worked at the downtown Pittsburgh Post office at 3:00 AM. He had a choice, get me up at 3:00 AM to drive him to work, or drive to work himself. We lived on the last Streetcar line in Pittsburgh, but it did not run between Midnight and 5:00 AM. So getting back from work was NOT a problem (I even took the Streetcar to my High School, to this day almost 10% of Pittsburgh mass transit riders take the LRV, the updated Streetcars that replaced the PCC cars of the time period I am talking about). Thus at 3:00 AM I heard a quiet yell, woke up, dressed and drove my father to the downtown Pittsburgh Post Office Building. I then drove back home and went back to bed (To get up 3 hours later for school). I later went to Collage downtown Pittsburgh so I ended up driving him to work for over six years (I also had full use of the Car, but since my high school issued me a bus pass, and later I purchased a bus permit while in School it was NOT much of a favor).

Anyway, I had been going downtown Pittsburgh for years before I started to drive my Father. It is only on these Morning Runs that I saw the Goldwater/Miller Sign. Faded, but still clearly readable in the late 1970s. I always laughed about it, for no one even thought about buying the spot for another sign. Next time I go Downtown Pittsburgh I try try to see if it still up.

8. I have a small Goldwater/Miller
campaign pin. I found it in our house when we moved in.

It was odd to find such a thing in this house. The previous owner was a strong Democrat. In his 91 years, he never voted for a repuke.

Maybe someone gave it to him, and he did not think it was worth touching or packing when he moved away in 1978.

14. I pass through Oregon on the way to my mother's house...
It's very quaint. And I'm constantly tempted to stop for dinner at Grubsteakers Restaurant. Should I?

16. I will ask around.
I have never eaten there.

I go to the Steak Pit, down by the river, on Route 2. I like that place.

Have you ever been to the Stronghold Castle? Now that is a cool place.

17. That is too cool!
I don't think I've ever even heard of it. But I grew up in the Lutherarn Church - Wisconsin Synod, and we liked to pretend that other religions didn't exist. So since Stronghold is owned by the Presbyterians, we wouldn't have been allowed to set foot on the grounds without an exorcism later.

I'm going to check to see if they do tours!

18. Stronghold has an interesting history.
I went there on a tour that my library sponsored for the kids. I have been back once, for the festivities they hold during Oregon's Autumn on Parade.

When you drive south on Route 2 toward Oregon, look up into the trees, just before the turnoff to Route 72. You can see the castle. You can see the castle best in the winter, when there are no leaves on the trees.

One odd thing about the castle: It is right along the river, but you can't see the river from inside the castle. It was built near a bend in the river that makes it impossible to see the river from inside. That must have been a source of disappointment for the Strong family.

13. Speaking of Goldwater/Miller pins, during the summer of 1964
I was in a shop in Nantucket, and there was a bin full of those pins. I got my little brother to help turn each of them upside down. I was 19 at the time, and already a Democrat.

People here who reminisce fondly about Goldwater should remember that one of his campaign slogans that year was to "bomb Hanoi back to the Stone Age."

Instead, we got Lyndon Johnson who broke his campaign promises and pretty much did the same thing Goldwater had promised to do.

15. Yes Lyndon was a true mass murderer and sociopath
He also helped kill a lot of my friends and associates.

I love it how almost all the Nike shoes are made in Viet-Nam-- AND That I can go back there today and visit the tunnels of Cu Chi

And I can't go to Havana for a Rum and Coke

What a fucked up deal.
