Sen. Domenici expected to retire-anounce tomorrow
http://thinkprogress.org/2007/10/03/sen-domenici-expected-to-retire/

Sen. Domenici expected to retire.

The Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza reports that Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM) is “expected to announce tomorrow that he will retire from the Senate in 2008.” Domenici continues to be “dogged” by questions about his role in the U.S. attorney scandal and the ouster of David Iglesias.

Maybe Richardson will run... that would be a lock
If Heather Wilson runs for the GOP side it could open up her House District
All good news

Although, thinking on the fly, I'll bet you that if Domenici retires, we'll see a replay of the contentious House race of 2006, in which Heather Wilson narrowly defeated Patricia Madrid. Of course, taking that race from a slightly red district to N.M. as a whole will give it different results.

14. Sure! Here ya go:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x3571741

I've got the Dems picking up 6 seats and the GOP 1 seat, though if Domenici does retire, the Dems could easily go 7. Hell, if we can hold onto that one seat that I think the GOP will take away, and if we can get the only contentious race that I gave to the GOP (Nebraska), we'll get a filibuster proof majority in the Senate.

(mind you, I don't think it's likely, but with Domenici out, it just moved from "impossible" to "improbable")

11. Most likely candidates to replace him:
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/thefix/2007/10/sen_pete_domenici_expected_to.html

The most likely candidates on the Republican side are Reps. Heather Wilson and Steve Pearce. Several Democrats are mentioned including Rep. Tom Udall, Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez, Lt. Gov. Diane Denish and former state Attorney General Patricia Madrid. The dream candidate for Democrats is Gov. Bill Richardson but his advisers insist he is not interested and focused on the 2008 presidential race. Wealthy businessman Don Wiviott is already in the race and has put several hundred thousand dollars of hiw own money into the bid.

23. Wilson would
be facing a tough challenge for her House seat, I think she will likely loose it to a pretty progressive guy. That's probably why she will likely run for "pajama Pete's Senate seat. I am not to sure if the Dem(Wiviott) that is running for Pete's job will be the strongest candidate.

24. Although Pete is
a Repuke, up until 2001 when * got installed into office he was not too bad a Senator for New Mexico, since then he has pretty much turned his back on his state. There will lot of Progressive Dem's glad to see him go.
