Bill Scher: This Veto Will Not Be Quiet
from OurFuture.org:

This Veto Will Not Be Quiet
Submitted by Bill Scher on October 3, 2007 - 11:40am.

This morning, President Bush stood for bad government, insurance companies and cheaper tobacco and vetoed expanding the State Children's Health Insurance Program to cover 10 million kids.

In the words of the White House, the plan was to "veto it quietly," so not to draw attention to such an unpopular act.

The latest poll from ABC and the Washington Post says 72% of Americans support expanding kids' health insurance by increasing tobacco taxes. Republican voters support expansion nearly as much as Democratic voters. The House members whom Bush is counting on to sustain his veto do not want to do it under a white hot spotlight.

Too bad. This veto will not be quiet.

An override vote won't happen for at least a week, but the time to contact your House member is now.

Let them know you expect them to stand with kids and for good government, not with Bush and bad government.

And keep letting them know.

UPDATE: MoveOn.org announces "On Thursday, October 4, local parents and kids will hold a 'Rally For Our Children’s Health' in front of over 200 congressional offices around the nation."

And a new FamiliesUSA video drives the point home.

5. christ. EVERYBODY should pay for it. But that'll never fly politically, unfortunately...
... There's a certain poetic justice to $.60 of every pack I buy going to help save a kid. I can live with that. Of course it's unfair - but sanctimonious nonsmokers aren't gonna change.

7. It should be paid for by an alcohol tax - cigarettes have been
taxed enough, but think how many Repugs would have to pay if alcohol were to be taxed.

9. Right, just like only people with children in school should pay for education.
I don't have any kids in school, so why should I have to pay for that? If I don't drive on your street, why should I pay taxes to have it repaired? Oops, I guess that's not how it works, does it?

not cheaper tobacco, just not more expensive tobacco. This makes it sound like he's reducing the taxes on tobacco.

if they wanted to raise taxes 10 cents or so a pack and also raise taxes on other things then that would be fine with me, but deciding that smokers should carry the full burden of cost is bullshit.
