SCHIP, the veto and politics
There's some sort of compromise being offered by the bushies regarding SCHIP, the funding would be approx. 2/3's of the original amount in the bill, and also cut the income eligibility requirements to $60k

Veto override - with the above "compromise" being offered, will congress cave-in and not try for override? If congress attempts an override - what do you think the consequences will be if it fails or succeeds? If it succeeds does this signal a large crack in the republic wall? If it fails - how does this impact the Dems?

Politics - interesting short segment on NPR yesterday. It was said the republics know they are in deep doo-doo, their image of being fiscally responsible is extremely tarnished. The republics were very anxious for a bill they could shoot down and yell "Tax & Spend Democrats" or one that bush could veto and the republics would rally round the president as being fiscally responsible.

Knowing this - the Dems brought up the SCHIP funding, a program with high support by the public and also one the republics would find hard to vote against and one they would also find even more difficult to vote against should bush veto it. Well, bush vetoed it, and now the republics are between a rock and a hard place - if they vote to override the veto they can't use it as a "Tax & Spend Democrats" theme song, if they uphold the veto then their "concern for children" and "family values" theme songs end up in the toilet.

your thoughts?

1. Why can't Congress show a little courage ?
with the above "compromise" being offered, will congress cave-in and not try for override?

Why not ? They've caved on everything else.

But if they support family values, let them vote to over-ride. Then let us mount a national campaign against every senator who votes to sustain the veto. What is less family oriented and more against families than refusing to give children a chance at good health ?

2. I'm still working out how to depict it in new toon...
but briefly - it's a take-off ofn WC Fields, where Fields says to a kid "go away kid, you're bothering me"

4. That's good
Now expand it with more of Fields. "Any man who hates dogs and children can't be all bad".
Let the GOP veto suppporters wear that sign around their neck until next election :-)
