I gave a climate talk in Limbaugh country the other night
Edited on Thu Oct-04-07 08:33 AM by greenman3610
250 crusty blue collar gun types at a hunt club in RED rural michigan.
Many auto workers, current and retired, many farmers.

although there were a few good natured chuckles at the mention of
Gore's name, the audience was quiet, attentive, and asked
good questions.
I stuck around for the kielbasa, kraut, and gun raffle,
and had a half dozen or 10 come, and, with one
confused paranoid exception, express real concern
about the changes they know are happening in the
natural world that they know well, and ask what could be done.
I got a lot of smiles and hand shakes, and
after, was asked to check with the local rotary to
get on their speakers list as well.

People are getting it.

1. thanks Greenman, it's good to know
I have often wondered if all conservatives care more about the GOP spin than they do the future of America for their kids and grandkids

according to limbaugh only atheists believe in global warming...

4. When the avalanche is hurtling down on you at 100 MPH, it's hard to deny the existence of snow . . .

Good work, Greenman! :toast:

If you were talking to people who like to hunt, fish and otherwise enjoy the natural world, I don't doubt that they do indeed get it.

It's the first week of October, it's in the 80s every afternoon here in Kansas City, the trees are just barely beginning to change color (with the exception of the walnuts, which always drop really early) and the hills are alive with the sound of bees, flies and mosquitoes.

Meanwhile, the 1 million square miles of newly ice-free Arctic Ocean is still wide open, and Rush, as pathetic as ever, conflates having eyes, ears and brains with lack of belief in the putative masturbation-punishing cloud deity.

5. That's wonderful. I hope you do get on that speakers list and give similar talks
to hunt clubs all over your area.

6. I used to work for the National Wildlife Federation.
People don't realize that this lobbying group was founded in the 1930's by hunters and fishermen; people who wanted to maintain the wilderness and keep it from being spoiled. People who work and recreate out of doors "get it" more than others do. Climate change is real, frightening, and fragile.

7. I suggest that most talks on global climate change start with a joke ...
A man hears a warning on the radio that the danger of a flood was mounting. The man brushed off the announcer's exhortations to get to safety with "God will protect me."

As the waters rose several feet into the street, a man in a motorboat passed by the first man, who was now on the second floor of his home. The man in the boat said "Come with me, and I'll rescue you." The first man says "God will protect me." and refuses the boat.

Climbing onto the roof of his house to escape the rising flood waters which are now to the roof, the man sees a helicopter. Over the loudspeaker, the pilot tells him that he will be rescued if he would board the helicopter. The man on the roof refuses, and shouts, "God will protect me!" The helicopter flies off.

The flood waters rise and wash the man off his roof. He tires from fighting the flood waters, and drowns.

He finds himself at the Pearly Gates. Tears flowing, the man asks St. Peter, "Why didn't God protect me from the flood?"

St. Peter says, "Hey, we told you on the radio, we sent a boat, and we sent a helicopter. What more could you ask for?"

People, we've heard the warnings on the radio ... let's not ignore God's warnings ...
