WTC steel becomes USS New York
(This came in an email, I thought all the WTC steel was shipped out of country. I have no idea why the picture of the ship sisn't paste. It pasted on an email I sent out. I see other people post pictures in their messages, can anyone clue me in on why the ship didn't show here?)

Here SHE is, the USS New York, made from the World Trade Center !

USS New York

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center .

It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-read y Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite , LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept 9, 2003, 'those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence,' recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. 'It was a spiritual moment for everybody there.'

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the 'hair on my neck stood up.' 'It had a big meaning to it for all of us,' he said. 'They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back.'

The ship's motto? 'Never Forget'

Please keep this going so everyone can see what we are made of in this country!

5. How does that thing do "special operations" against terrorists?
I guess the only way to sell useless crap like that anymore is to claim that it's for use against terrorists.

7. Would that steel even be structurally sound?
I realize they put it in a pot and melted it after they recovered it but damn, that doesn't seem like the best idea in the world on how to use it if you're asking me.

16. reused
Watched a tv show a few months back about this. The steel was not re-forged, it was melted down and poured as a large casting.

13. Yes, it's like building a ship out of coffin wood
Like, used coffins. I don't know why anyone fancied this a good idea.

23. Even coffin wood wouldn't hold the potential psychic residue
this ship would. This metal had the death of thousands in direct contact with it. Coffins are filled usually long after the soul has departed and either moved on or inhabited the place of its death.

10. I thought China bought the steel?
http://edition.cnn.com/2002/WORLD/asiapcf/east/01/23/china.wtcsteel/

Does that mean the USS NY has too much lead paint and will sink if a minnow bonks its head against the hull?

21. True per snopes
Edited on Sat Oct-06-07 08:37 AM by MiniMe
http://www.snopes.com/photos/military/ussnewyork.asp

But Snopes doesn't include the motto at the end, so not sure if that part is true. They are also going to name a ship "Arlington" for the Pentagon and "Somerset" for the county in PA where the last plane crashed.

Artists rendering of the ship

Picture removed by OP, apprently Snopes doesn't let you link to their pictures, I get a Mr Yuck instead.
