TULSA —
A U.S. Army soldier from Broken Arrow who was recovering from wounds suffered
in a 2004 roadside bombing in Iraq has died, according to his family.
Army Staff Sgt. Jack D. Richards, 39, died in North Carolina, where he was on
medical leave and receiving treatment at Fort Bragg, said his sister, Pam Schultz
of Broken Arrow.
Richards nearly lost a leg when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee in 2004
while he was serving in Iraq. "They've been trying to repair him for three years,
and they were still in the process when we lost him,” Schultz told the Tulsa World.

A Westfield Guardsman who was wounded in action in Iraq has died, state officials announced today.
Officials said Indiana Army National Guard Sgt. Gerald J. Cassidy, 32, died at Ft. Knox, Ky.,
while assigned to the Wounded Warrior Transition Program. He was wounded during unspecified
combat operations and was returned to the states in April after a year of duty. Prior to his
transfer to the medical recovery program in Kentucky, the Indiana Guardsman had served in Iraq
with a combat team from the Minnesota National Guard.
“Sgt. Cassidy represents citizen-soldiers everywhere who sacrifice family and career to serve
their state and nation,” said the Indiana Guard’s leader, Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger.
