Bruce Springsteen brushes off 'unpatriotic' label
Springsteen brushes off 'unpatriotic' label
2 hours, 42 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AFP) - Rock legend Bruce Springsteen has brushed off critics who label him unpatriotic, countering that the United States has itself engaged in "anti-American" activity since President George W. Bush took power.

"I think we've seen things happen over the past six years that I don't think anybody ever thought they'd ever see in the United States," Springsteen told CBS television in an interview due to be broadcast Sunday.

He notably criticized CIA interrogation techniques, Bush's domestic surveillance program and the detention of terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, without referring to them explicitly.

"When people think of the Unites States' identity, they don't think of torture. They don't think of illegal wiretapping... They don't think of no habeas corpus," he said, referring to suspects being held without charge.

"Those are things that are anti-American," he said. "There's been a whole series of things that... I never thought I'd ever see in America," he added.

snip...
"It's unpatriotic at any given moment to sit back and let things pass that are damaging to some place that you love so dearly," he added.

34. If these FACTS would have been WIDELY known by each and...
every American citizen, I truly believe none of the BFEE criminals would have ever been President of the United States in the first place:

BFEE

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_oet&address=358x3087

The Big Question Is: Does Mr. Springsteen Know About All These Facts (I Doubt He Does), And If He Does Not, Who Will Inform Him About Them?

More, Everybody Should Know About These Facts (Before It's Too Late, If It's Not Too Late Already).

10. WARNING: Straw man Alert
People should read this article again and take not of the "some critics" crap. Which critics is this "reporter" referring to? Who, other than the typical right-wing blowholes have criticized Bruce for speaking his mind. I hate this kind of writing.

52. You are correct that note should be taken
The article should say who the fuck "some critics" are, but I don't think this article advances the legitimacy of whoever "some critics" are. If the intent of the article is to sow right wing dogma by trying to legitimize a generalized "Springsteen is unpatriotic" accusation by failing to mention which blowhard rightwingers leveled such crap, then it has failed miserably.

The underlying purpose of the media driven perpetuation of rightwing blowholes is difficult to discern: Is it to sow controversy which the media can thrive on by writing about famous peoples' reactions to it? Or is it to simply sow hatred, fear, and strife for the profit of corporations? Whatever the case, The Boss makes some hatefull motherfuckery apparent.

31. Hey, my son's a Marine
with three tours to Iraq and we would never criticize Bruce. My son voted for Kerry. It's time people realized that the military is not one organism that blindly supports the right. And though a majority of military personnel still favor the right, their lead is diminishing. Campaign contributions from the military, which have tupically favored Republicans, are increasingly going to Dem. candidates. And groups like Vote.Vets and Taking the Hill are dedicated to changing the perception America has of the military's political views.
Liberal families have kids in the military. College-eduated parents with advanced degrees have kids in the military. Families with incomes over six figures have kids in the military.
As for upper middle-class conservative families who favor war? Not so much.

20. Except the Republicans wanted to his songs in campaigns as well
They didn't think he was unpatriotic then. Springstein always said no to both parties using his songs or commercial interests using them - the only exception was John Kerry. (Who is the only one he ever endorsed.) The events where he joined Kerry at the end of the race were incredible - his comments were as awesome as his songs.

21. Oh yeah, like in Madison, WI. The MSM showed him do a song,
then thought better of it, by cutting away from Kerry's speech. It was COMPELLING TV, and they just cut away.

There is a reason why they call Bruce Springsteen The Boss.

44. That's because Republicans are clueless when it comes to song lyrics.
They heard the chorus to "Born in the USA" and just kind of hummed through the rest of it- you know, the part about a vietnam vet who gets royally fucked over.

What's really scary is when they try to dance- look the fuck out!

26. When someone calls Bruce Springsteen unpatriotic it tells you more about them than him
Bruce Springsteen is an American Icon. He is a symbol of America. He is quintessential Americana. Calling him unpatriotic is like calling Baseball, Apple pie, and the Forth of July terrorists plots.

he is internationally known. He symbolizes the freedom of a rebel who rocked and spoke out to the entire world. Lots of people here in France know who he is. From what I gather folks used to think most americans were sort of like him but not as good looking or able to play music as well, now they take us for a buch of greedy dipshits.....thanks w

33. Reagan loved that song
The Republicans are just so tone deaf about American pop culture. They're always so desperate in their attempts to undo their "last kid picked for kickball" status. Watch Newt when he's on The Daily Show. He just tries so hard. So does O'Reilly. And yet they fail so pathetically. They have no timing or ear.
Like Reagan glomming onto "Born in the USA".
You're right. It is funny.
