Arrest warrant issued for President of Interpol

South African prosecutors have issued an arrest and search warrant for Jackie Selebi, the country's police chief who is also the President of Interpol.

The warrants are on hold pending a review by the National Prosecuting Authority, whose Director, Vusi Pikoli, has been suspended by South Africa's President Thabo Mbeki.

Selebi has denied allegations of links to organised crime, and a friendship with a man accused of murder.

The Government and prosecutors have in the past refused to confirm or deny the warrants had been issued, however prosecutors confirmed Friday they were issued last month.
