Topps Meat shutting down after recall -- (Yeah!!)
Topps Meat shutting down after recall

The Associated Press
October 5, 2007

ELIZABETH, N.J.

Topps Meat Co. LLC, the meat company responsible for the second-largest beef recall in U.S.
history, said Friday it will close its plant in Elizabeth, N.J., and go out of business,
effective immediately.

Topps on Sept. 25 began a recall of its frozen hamburger meat that was expanded to comprise
21.7 million pounds of the meat, which may be contaminated with E. coli after federal inspectors
discovered inadequate safety measures at its plant.

Investigators think 30 people may have been sickened in Indiana and seven other states.

In a statement, Chief Operating Officer Anthony D'Urso said called the events "tragic."

"In one week we have gone from the largest U.S. manufacturer of frozen hamburgers to a company
that cannot overcome the economic reality of a recall this large," he said.

A "small number" of the 87 plant employees will remain at the plant to assist the U.S. Department
of Agriculture with its investigation into the meat recall and handle administrative matters.

Topps Meat was founded in 1940.

10. This contamination of E-Coli has affected thousands of people across the USA and
25 are or were sick and the company was not being careful or following safety practices
and it isn't just the meat but also 25 other products they package and sell.

"Late last week, federal food safety investigators halted meat grinding operations
at the Topps plant after inspectors found inadequate safety measures in place."

"Topps admits that the recalled products had been distributed to retail grocery stores
and food service institutions throughout the country. Despite health officials finding
below par standards related to health at Topps"

And they didn't bother telling anyone for weeks!! The workers will find more work
but this company should've cleaned it's machines, once in awhile to avoid this from
happening but they didn't. I don't want to eat their products, do you?

7. Topps won't be poisoning anyone, anymore and that's a good thing!

That was what the YEAH was for and you knew that!

And with 258 meat packing plants in NJ, I'm sure these workers will find more work.

5. How big was Topps?
How much cattle did they own or butcher? Maybe in some way the silver lining can be harvested, due to the fact that it was recently reccommended that the farts of cattle are partly to blame for global warming. Maybe the fact that one less meat co. is in operation will greatly reduce the methane?? Just a thought.

11. I'm not happy these people will be looking for new jobs but I am glad Topps is shut down.
There are almost 2,000 meat packing plants in the US and a lot of those (over 200) are in NJ!

14. "You're an a**hole."
I'm an asshole? You're the one cheering about a plant shutting down following a tragedy.

"You knew damn well what I meant."

Indeed I did. That's why I said "uh huh."

16. This does not mean the end of meat
Someone else will profit from Topps Meat's loss. The cows are not safe yet.
