Attention Moderators:

Moyer's program is on a sensitive topic this week, but Skinner has provided permission to post it here in GD.

Starting at 7:30 Central Time (check your local listings)

NOW with David Brancaccio

This Week on NOW: Michael Apted

NOW's David Brancaccio sits down with acclaimed director Michael Apted to talk about how socioeconomic status and education influence life here and in Britain. Apted discusses what he's learned from making "49 Up," the seventh chapter of his groundbreaking documentary series that follows the lives of English citizens every seven years. "49 Up" premieres on POV October 9.

Off the Grid

Also on the show, we visit Decorah, Iowa, where several families are going above and beyond the energy conservation call of duty by going off the electricity grid and producing their own power from renewable sources. They've given up some amenities, like air conditioning, but they haven't given up everything. Even more families who remain connected to the grid use Iowa's net metering laws to sell the extra energy they generate back to their utility company. Do they have the power to make it last?

Israel's New Best Friend

As leader of the politically powerful group Christians United for Israel (CUFI), Pastor John Hagee wants to bring millions of Christians together to support Israel. But some say his message is dangerous: “It is time for America to…consider a military preemptive strike against Iran to prevent a nuclear holocaust in Israel and a nuclear attack in America.”

Then, Bill Moyers gets theological and political context on Christian Zionism from Dr. Timothy P. Weber, an evangelical Christian, historian, and the author of ON THE ROAD TO ARMAGEDDON: HOW EVANGELICALS BECAME ISRAEL'S BEST FRIEND, and Rabbi Michael Lerner, editor of TIKKUN, a Jewish journal of politics, culture, and spirituality.

Also on the program, a year after the tragic shooting, Bill Moyers looks at what the Amish can teach us about healing.

On The Moyers Blog

Ronald J. Sider, president of Evangelicals for Social Action offers another voice from the evangelical Christian community on hope for peace in the Middle East.

What's driving the popularity of religious movements? Tell us what you think.

Preview Bill Moyers' essay on lessons from the Amish.

2. PBS is always good ... particularly after Jim Leher's program is over...
Used to watch Jim Leher (especially in the McNeil/Leher days), but I honestly cannot anymore.

Thank goodness for David Brancaccio and Bill Moyers... and, of course, Ken Burns specials.
