Rep. Wilson to Seek Domenici's N.M. Seat
By BARRY MASSEY, Associated Press Writer

Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M., applauds as she listens to ...

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Rep. Heather Wilson intends to seek the Senate seat being vacated in New Mexico by fellow Republican Pete Domenici, the Associated Press has learned.

Wilson made the decision Thursday after meeting with her family and notified her staff Friday morning. She was calling supporters around New Mexico to tell them of her decision, according to a senior adviser to Wilson who spoke on condition of anonymity so as not to pre-empt a formal announcement expected later Friday.

Wilson is the first major candidate to declare her candidacy for the seat, which Domenici has held since 1973. Earlier Friday, Democratic Rep. Tom Udall announced that he would not run for the seat.

On Thursday, Domenici announced that he was retiring in January 2009, at the end of his sixth term. He said he had been diagnosed with an incurable brain disease that might prevent him from fulfilling a seventh term in office.<snip>

1. That wench might actually beat Richardson
if she duplicates the Domenici "They're CLOSING OUR BASES! Let me SAVE THEM!!" dog and pony show.

Our main hope is that attorneygate heats up enough to put all those retired military types off voting for that harpy. If not, she'll win.

In any case, even if she does get in, she'll be a whole lot less powerful that that old fossil Domenici was.

4. The talking heads said the state is turning BLUE and a Democrat had a very good chance of winning.
I wish I could remember which head said that, but they all look alike after a while.

15. There are lots of Dems here. NM is normally a blue state.
Unfortunately, Heather does everything she can to come off as some kind of dedicated moderate (even though she has enabled Bush every step of the way). Some people fall for that, even Dems. I live in her district.

I don't know that Richardson would run for the Senate. Udall might--I'd love it if that happened, but then we'd have to get someone to run in his place in the House.

We have a lot of military here. I love military jet noise! Some people think of her as a strong, intelligent female military moderate, but she has been party line all the way.

12. Hmmm, I don't know. Repuke fervor seems to be dying here and Richardson
remains as popular as ever. As I said in another post, I think Richardson would beat the pants off of Wilson, particularly with the scandal hanging over her head. If he makes education a priority and vows to take on NCLB, I can't see how he would lose.

Just my take, though.

14. Oh, Repuke fervor is moribund from about Los Lunas on north
Unfortunately for us, the rest of the state still has churchgoing true believers interspersed with all those military retirees, and those retirees are death to Democrats. So far.

We can only hope Heartless Heather keeps getting hammered by things like the GOP Congress's failure to protect the troops with adequate equipment, especially the misused NG troops, and their failure to provide adequate health care for those returning with physical and mental problems, and her part in Attorneygate.

The gloves have to be off in this race. Ladies and gentlemen don't have a chance against that harpy.

25. Some of the biggest opponents of illegal immigration in NM
are old Hispanic families who have lived here for a very long time. NM is the most culturally diverse place I've ever lived in, but Albuquerque is over three hundred years old. There are old Spanish/French families here, families of Mexican origin, semitic/Hispanic families, lots of native Americans of course, very blond people with Spanish first or last names--it's a trip. New Mexico has its own dialect, its own cuisine, and in some cases, its own vocabulary, like "huero" or "mucharo."

But cultural diversity does not necessarily mean a free-for all for people who are trying to get into New Mexico illegally. As a matter of fact, there's a backlash here. Some of the families who have ranches going back decades or even centuries have been living here and working the land, working HARD. Many are of Mexican origin, and some of these are very hard core about their citizenship.

26. Another thing I might point out about NM is that politics is very local.
There aren't very many people here, and so it isn't uncommon, when you're asking about politics, to talk to someone who knows the candidates, or at least someone who has talked to them on a fairly regular basis.

For instance, I have a very dear friend who has lived here for almost 30 years, and she tells me about run-ins with Heather at various functions at different times. My real estate agent is a member of the ACLU here, and he has met Richardson, and so have his friends (he has some great stories).

27. Well, I'm in repuke central down here in SE NM
and while many people here remain willfully and stubbornly ignorant and conservative, they are not nearly as vocal and active as what I have seen in years past. Hence my "Repuke fervor is dying." I just don't think many will turn out to vote their USUAL tendencies. That, combined with those who HAVE turned, will turn NM blue in the upcoming elections, I think (and hope).

You make a great point about Wilson and vets and taking care of active troops. I actually hadn't thought of that. I'll definitely keep that in mind and do some research. Just in case, heh heh.

Heather Wilson barely won in 2006, and now she's stained with the whole Inglesias thing.

And what about Tom Udall running? Couldn't he beat her?

Looks like Udall has opted out:

Democratic Rep. Udall opts not to seek Domenici's Senate seat
A prominent New Mexico Democrat who had been mentioned as a possible candidate for the seat that Republican Sen. Pete Domenici will give up at the end of his term next year has decided not to get into that race.

Rep. Tom Udall said today he will run for re-election to his House seat instead, The Albuquerque Tribune and other media are reporting.

In a statement, the Tribune reports, Udall said:

"The election to replace Domenici in 2008 will be a tough one, but I have every reason to believe I could win it. ...

"I also believe, however, that as I continue to gain in seniority in the House, assume more of a leadership role, assert my authority on the appropriations committee and pass significant legislation like my bill to promote renewable energy, I am in the right place to serve New Mexico and the country."

<snip>

The article mentions dem mayor (of Albuquerque) as being interested in running. Don't know a thing about him.

19. He could, but I don't think he wants to go for it.
The Udalls are very prominent politicians in the West: Mark Udall (CO): the late Morris (Mo) Udall (AZ, but also connected to AK); and Tom Udall (NM).

Mo Udall is famous for environmental and Native American protective legislation. He was Mark and Tom's father, I believe. Here's a link to the Morris Udall Foundation:

http://www.udall.gov/udall.asp?Link=107

The Udalls have a long record of protecting the environment in the West. Mark was my congressman when I lived in Colorado. He came to my house, campaigning, one evening when I wasn't home. My son, then around 14, answered the door, and Mark came in and talked to him for about 15 minutes! It was great.

13. Udall stated today that he won't run for Senate. That leaves
"Lt. Gov. Diane Denish, Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez and former Attorney General Patricia Madrid are among the Democrats looking at the race.

Democratic Gov. Bill Richardson said Friday that he's committed to his presidential race and would serve out his term as governor if he doesn't secure the Democratic presidential nomination."

22. Not Chavez, please...
He tried to insert a favorite candidate against Deb O'Malley. It didn't work, but I didn't appreciate his meddling.

Madrid would be good, provided she learned a few things about debate last time around (when she was running against Heather).

36. Half agree...
I don't know that Marty can win a statewide race ( don't know that he can't either). Have known him for years (mostly as an acquaintance, but we used to hang out some, many years ago before he got into politics), but can't ever get a handle on him politically, although he sides with conservatives vs. progressives more often than not. Yet he was one of the first Howard Dean supporters among prominent Dems, and well before there was any sort of Dean bandwagon. Madrid, in my opinion , would be a certain loss. If she couldn't beat Heather here, with a decided Democratic edge in registered voters, I can't see how she does any better with all the right wing yahoos all over the east side. And you know damn well they'd replay Patsy's Nancy Pelosi-esque deer in the headlights brain fart for the benefit of all the deep thinkers out there about , oh , a million times.

8. Heather comes with lots of baggage
Wilson is in trouble in her own congressional district and barely hung onto her seat last time around. And that was before the Gonzales flap. She would be a very vulnerable candidate, so I say let her run!

She won by around 800 votes against Patricia Madrid. She is weak now.
I hope we get a GOOD runner against her for Senate. The State Dem Party HQ is changing and getting the message taht we are tired of DEM whimps!

32. Sorry I was so brief.
Domenici is ill and won't run again in 2008. He is one of our U.S. senators; the other is Bingaman, and I'm proud of him.

So this is an opportunity for a Dem to take his seat. Heather Wilson, who is a Republican House rep. for my district, is going to pursue it.

So the question becomes: which Dem will run against Heather?

35. Heather Wilson mentored by pedophiles
Wilson mentored by deviants Mark Foley and maybe husband Jay Hone.

Republican Congresswoman on Congressional Page Board buried file on husband's child abuse allegation. (Sexual molestation allegation)

Brian Beutler, Published: Thursday October 19, 2006
http://www.rawstory.com/news/2006/Congresswoman_on_page_board_buried_file_1019.html

A file allegedly suppressed by Congresswoman Heather Wilson (R-NM) has been obtained by RAW STORY.

In 1995, just three days into her tenure as Secretary of the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department, Wilson removed a routine working file alleging that her husband "Jay Hone" had engaged in inappropriate contact with a minor. The file was then transferred to the department's attorney in her own Albuquerque office, where it soon went missing...

...Filed as a case of child abuse in 1993, it contends that Wilson's husband Jay Hone, an Albuquerque attorney, touched a then-16 year old boy "in a manner that was not welcome..."

...Six years after the incident, in 2001, Wilson began a three year term on the House Page Board, where she sat while rumors of Mark Foley's inappropriate behavior with underage men were reportedly widespread.
