Jena Mayor Calls Song Inflammatory

A video in which rapper-actor Mos Def asked students around the country to walk out Oct. 1 to support the "Jena Six" escaped comment by this town's mayor. But when John Mellencamp sang, "Jena, take your nooses down," he took issue.

"The town of Jena has for months been mischaracterized in the media and portrayed as the epicenter of hatred, racism and a place where justice is denied," Jena Mayor Murphy R. McMillin wrote in a statement on town letterhead faxed on Friday to The Associated Press.

He said he had previously stayed quiet, hoping that the town's courtesy to people who have visited over the past year would speak for itself. "However, the Mellencamp video is so inflammatory, so defamatory, that a line has been crossed and enough is enough."

if a line was crossed it was crossed in Jena, not by Mellencamp

2. They had a tree that only white people could sit under
And they let it stand for decades, with everyone passing through that school KNOWING only white people could sit under it, and they are worried that a SONG is inflammatory? Or that it mischaracterizes their town?

He's got to be kidding.

3. Nooses. Ha ha. Childish prank. Ha ha ha. Not really a symbol of oppression,
murder, bigotry and hate.

In Jenna, the noose symbolizes childhood frolicking, good natured ribbing and play-fullness.

You damn yankees are so stoopid.

:sarcasm: (just in case...)

4. When a black student has to ask the Vice Principal
if it's okay to gather under a "white" tree in 2007, it's your town that has the problem (a huge one), Mr. Mayor. Kudos, as always, to Mr.; Mellencamp.

5. You reap what you sow. Jena brought this all upon themselves. Had they done the right thing to begin

with, like PUNISH THE SPOILED LITTLE RACIST WHITE KIDS FOR HANGING FUCKING NOOSES FROM THEIR "WHITE" TREE, MELLENCAMPS SONG WOULDN'T EVEN EXIST. Dumb asses. The mayor's just angry that his racist town has been exposed to the world. TOO FUCKING BAD. Perhaps instead of whining about a song, he could pass a new law that prohibits any kind of racism in Jena? Nah....then the next bunch of spoiled little racist white kids might be held accountable for their actions.

6. Heaven forbid ...
We do not want to do anything to interfere with Jena opening its new immigration detention facility.

After all, we misunderstood them when their Juvenile Correction facility was forced to close after reports of beatings, brutality, and racism.

Then we misunderstood them again after the Katrina inmates filed suit over brutality and being treated like animals.

Yeah, Jena needs another chance to prove that it will not brutalize and beat its next batch of minorities under its control. They need this chance to get good jobs and following in the grand old American tradition of using human chattel to just get by. :sarcasm:

7. Gaw-lee, Mr. Mayor
Wasn't it your local prosecuting attorney who characterized a sneaker in the hands of a black teen-ager as a deadly weapon? Sorry if that makes the rest of you look like racist haters denying justice, but it's an easy pair of dots to connect. Do you plan to do anything about it, or are you satisfied with whining? I know how powerless white elected officials are in the South (and all over the country), so your oppression in this matter hurts me deeply.

Like the tree called those guys to throw a noose on it's limb.:eyes:
Yeah, it's the tree's fault:banghead:

Stupid, stupid, stupid...and I don't even like the word, "stupid."
