Sadly, I have concluded that I am not a patriot.
Sure, when my time came I put on a green suit. I got shot at, and shot back. That pretty much sums up my service. A grateful nation gave me some tin and helped me pay for college. Unlike Hannity, Limbaugh, Coulter, et al, I served - but no matter, I'm not a patriot. Unlike Limbaugh, I'm still married to the love of my life, and am raising two great sons. Who cares? I have neither been busted for prescription drug abuse, nor popped for vote fraud. So what? I have been a Sunday School teacher, a Cub Scout leader, and a Little League coach. Big fucking deal. I can't be a patriot. Hell, I'm not even a good American. Just ask anyone at FoxNoise. You see, friends, I don't wear a flag lapel pin. I'm so ashamed.

As unpatriotic as our Founding Fathers, when they launched their subversive words and then their terrorist assualt against their own nation.

Isn't in funny how tyrants like Hitler, Napoleon and Bushler give such a bad name to patriotism for year, sometimes decades thereafter?

Intristically, patriotism can be one of humanities' noblest callings (the deceased writer, Robert Heinlein, once beautifully and logically outlined why in an essay in his book "Expanded Universe", which I would highly recommend).

Sometimes it sounds a little Bushie, but as a fellow veteran, I think it will be clear to you that Heinlein was no Bushie (in spite of the creepy concepts in Starship Troopers...everyone has the right to slip into foolishness for a moment, and it was just fiction), and if he were alive today he may have been fooled at first by their Bushie Lies, but he would have been one of the first to realize his error in the face of the facts.

But patriotism, like any other "tool" such as guns or scientific progress, can be used for good or ill, it depends on the hands and minds that wield them, and as we have seen, in addition to patriotism being one of huminites' noblest callings, it has also been behind the perpetration of humanity's greatest evils, such as Bushie Germany in DubyaDubyaTwo, and Bushie Amerika today, which is not even close (yet) to humanity's greatest evils but has he great potential today to become so, if these trends remain unreversed.

YOU are the TRUE patriot. Not some chicken-hawk armchair generals, who tout that a measure of one's patriotism is agreeing with the administration, EVEN when they commit crimes, and take us to war with a country that didn't attack us, and didn't pose a threat. A measure of one's patriotism is what they to for their country, and community, not the color of the freakin' pin they wear on their chest.

Stuff like this really gets me mad. It's like the people who put American flags on their German and Japanese cars. How patriotic is that? When you buy a car whose parent company is overseas, where do you think the profits go? Sure, some of them go to the workers in the factories here who assemble these cars, but the engineers, and executives are in another country, and your dollars go there too.
Global economy my rear. This country used to fund ALL of its government functions with TARIFFS. It seems that the corporatocracy thinks that 'tariff' is a dirty word, because they can't fund their platinum parachutes, and such.
I want to take the flags off of these cars and shove them up the owners' keisters, and call them out for the real traitors they are!
Arrgh! Don't get me started with this. It just gets me SOOOOOOOO freakin' mad!

in American, and the "American" car companies can't, why should we support those "American" companies?

I use the quotation marks around the word "American," because guess what? The Dodge Intrepid (to use just one example), which was advertised as (and this is a direct quote) "The Rebirth of the American Family Sedan" was built, guess where? Canada, that's where.

Furthermore, do yourself a favor, and do some research on where many "American" cars are actually built. I'll give you a dollar for every one that you find is actually built in America, if you'll give me a dollar for every one that's built in Mexico or Canada.

until W came along. Since the day he took office I have worn the pin upside down. And a lot of wrists have been lightly slapped for trying to "fix" it. And I've been glared at, stared at, cussed at and stomped-off at. But it's staying upside down until Bush and Co. are out of office. When that danger is gone we'll be able to live proudly again, without the need to wear little cheesey flags in order to out-American each other.

I cant imagine how it are feeling, when your country are what US are today, with a President who cant even SPELL nations or try to speak withouth pre-scripted plans.. I know that it is many names who are dificult to understand for americans, but you havent had this type of man in power before...

If half what is been writing here on DU or other "regime critical sites" around the world is true, US is in the grasp of starting to be a dictatorship faster than ever.. US who are today are striking similaries to countrys like German in the middleyear between the two world war, or the Sovjet union of 1950-1970s.. Yes you havent getting that far as Germany and Russia have been, but you are absolutely in the danger of starting to be like that verry fast if you dont know how to stop it... Your fear, your anger are building up a regime who can destroy the rest of the world.. If you belive US are in dip dodo now?.. I really hope it wil not happend something to US before 2009.. If US are attaced, the marshal law, the ulawfould arrest of thousands of sivilians are just the isberg who are to happend.. The prisions, military and sivilian vil overflow, not just with criminals, but sivilians who just are in the way of the new "world" ...

As a forreigner, I am scared about what is happening in US, this is not a healty nation, who are waging a war for peace and justise.. This is not THE nation who after WW2 was europes garanti, who 3 generations grow up to admire, and maybee love to... 3 generation europan have a good wiew of US.. Today you may see that slip away, and I dont know what wil follow after that..

I am scared that US, and spesially the extreme element are willing to get to war over EVERYONE who object to US war politic... If this exuse for a man had used the suport he was getting after 911 he had coming a long way already.. Now he is F*** everywhere you se it, and it is the extremist groups who suport him now. And they are powerfull enought to get what they want.. Maybee even a dictatorship with GWB as their figurhead...

The US has been the flagship for democracy and freedom, but we don't own it. We are as likely as any country to lose the "delicate balance" if we are not careful. And we have not been careful.

Restoring the balance is a difficult task, and frustrating to us who are having a hard time making changes. Your fears are my fears.

In my own language the saying is like this "demokrati kommer ikke rekende på en fjøl, men må jobbes hardt for og oppnås".. Or, if I may try to translate it to some "bad" engelish. Democracy are not easy to build, and have to been build one brick of time.. And US hav had that "balance" for many year.. Under the war, and after the war america with it prosperity and velbuild democracy was a kind of shining "exemple".. Even that many europan had some disagremant over many thing the american policy was doing, both in our "backyard" or in other lands, we do respected US for the democracy it was...

It locks like US have not been "carefull" with the balance of power, and now have a President who act more an more like a dictator, who dosent care to respekt the Senat or the Kongress. In fact he cant se to respect the people who get him "elected" even, and that is BAD when you think about it.. Many conservative who really belived that mr Bush was making The White house more respectable after Clintons " I dont have sex with that woman" have turned from him, and turned their back on the policy that mr Bush are advocating... And the result is that Mr Bush are been more isolated, to the group who REALLY have the power behind mr Bush Presidency.. Yes mr Bush is the President, but it is other who REALLY are ruling the country behind him, and who are given hi, the adwices he rule by.. in the 1970s, the Star War movies was made public, and one of the plot was that "emperor Palpatine" was using a policy with the Death Star. Rule by fear: Mr Bush have not a Death Star to rule by, but he is puting many of the same ideas, tha it play for the fear that are living inside the most peopole after 9/11. Istead of building of the suport he was given both international and national, he divided the whole world into "evil" and "nice" and then build the policy he want to be know by. Rule by Fear, and divide the oppotion to do what he want.. Many of the new laws, specially they who are given mr Bush as President more and more power to rule by decree, not by consent from Kongress or Senat are slovely destroying the fundation who have made US the great nation it was once... As the "Galactic Senat" in Starwars was destroying becouse of the powergrab and corruption from their officals, it is scarry to se some of the same politic are playing out in the US kongress and senat today.. But YOU can stop it if you really want it, push for shange contact the officals and wote in pepole who are decent enough to try to fix the problems... Then you dont need to act supriced when the the US type of Dart Vader are coming public out and use the "rule by fear". Even without the Death Star weapon...

It wil be HARD to rebuild what is destroyd, but if you want help, you wil get it from your "irellevant allied" when the time come.. I know it wil be hard to get help from germany, france and the other european nation who for 50 year or so was depended of US military help. But for the most part, we are willing to help US, and dont demand to mutch in return... Just try to respect us, and you wil come a long way of rebuilding the good ol days I guess...

And it it is god to know that my fear are shared by many others to, it is kind of "comforting" to know that not EVERYONE american are bying into the official policy of Mr Bush politic.. But it is many who are doing it.. I know about some, and they are fighting everytime mr Bush have doing a "gaffer"... Belive me that is not pretty when they are using their more foul language..

58. Since we were always surrounded
being inside the perimeter wasn't all that safe. Base camps provided stationary targets the VC and NVA had zeroed in. We were all one shot away from having our names on the Wall in DC. But I will say, my worst times were in the field, and the thoughts of those times are best left resting.

Enlisted for the college money and bit of worldly experience that was not to be found in Podunk, USA where I grew up. Operated tanks/apc's, ran around with machine guns, and played with demolitions. Later I was sent to blow up a country in a desert. A few near hits later I'm was back in garrison finding myself drunk off my ass and trying to console a squad mate while he spent hours screaming and crying how he couldn't get the sound of screaming kids out of his head. I'm in college, living on a farm (courtesy of her mother's most gracious charity)with the missus of almost eight years now. I too bare the shameful stigma of being a bad American because I don't wear a flag lapel pin.

People who don`t wear flag pins get put on an Enemies List or something, plus they look unpatriotic when they`re photograped beside Chickenhawks. If you want one, I`ll go get a pin for you at our big, corporate drug store. Their flag pins are made in China, only 99 cents. The pin on the back won`t break off as long as you`re careful not to wiggle it too much.

but in retrospect WTF else was I gonna do at that age. Since then I have been married to the same woman for 45 years, two kids and three grandkids and just found out we're going to be great grandparents in April. I don't wear a flag lapel pin either. Ergo I too am no patriot. Wish I'd known how easy it was. Just buy a two bit flag pin made in China and stick it on you coat and yer a patriot.

I volunteered thousands of hours at the veterans hospital in Palo Alto. And for what it's worth, I'm an eagle scout.

We're lucky they include us as citizens. And I'll admit to having hated the flag for decades, as it is a symbol of the right wing of this country. So I really belong in Canada, as far as they're concerned.

Service aside, just raising a nice pair of kids is the best thing you can do for your country. I'm in the parenting business myself, and I know it's not easy. You deserve more accolades for that than just about anything else.

Although, did you know that to become a patriot all you have to do is raise $150,000 in campaign donations? Really, it's that easy.
