Scandal at Oral Roberts U.

Posted on Oct 6, 2007

Televangelists and scandals seem to go together, and now some members of Oral Roberts’ family may be about to rise a few ranks on the faith-based-and-disgraced list that includes Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart. This time, Roberts’ son, Richard, and Richard’s wife are apparently at the heart of the hullabaloo, and the wife’s penchant for texting underage fellows in the wee hours isn’t even the half of it.

AP via My Way News:

Richard Roberts is accused of illegal involvement in a local political campaign and lavish spending at donors’ expense, including numerous home remodeling projects, use of the university jet for his daughter’s senior trip to the Bahamas, and a red Mercedes convertible and a Lexus SUV for his wife, Lindsay.

She is accused of dropping tens of thousands of dollars on clothes, awarding nonacademic scholarships to friends of her children and sending scores of text messages on university-issued cell phones to people described in the lawsuit as “underage males.”

At a chapel service this week on the 5,300-student campus known for its 60-foot-tall bronze sculpture of praying hands, Roberts said God told him: “We live in a litigious society. Anyone can get mad and file a lawsuit against another person whether they have a legitimate case or not. This lawsuit ... is about intimidation, blackmail and extortion.”

Was it Oral who saw the 900 foot Jesus?

Why weren't these bunko rackets wiped out in the '80s?

Oh yeah, I forgot. St Reagan arrived & bequeathed unto us mental illness as a leadership requirement.

That documentary, "Marjoe" inoculated me to the evangelical rackets forever.

Not that I was much at risk before that anyway.

It was very vivid, with the ministers 'splitting the take' backstage after the show.

The documentary is on DVD as well.

According to IMDB, Mr. Gortner now sponsors charity events.

PS: Dig the comments on the YouTubes. Old Marjoe is still pissing of the hucksters and their blind flocks.

5. Last I saw of him was in a movie with Lynda (Wonder Woman) Carter
They did a scene with her topless.

It was a religious experience.

6. This hit me -one more Bushbot.
San Antonio televangelist John Hagee, a member of the ORU board of regents, said the university's executive board "is conducting a full and thorough investigation."

11. Remember what happened to one of daddy Oral's first critics?
Former ORU executive Jerry Sholes wrote a tell-all book in which he said that Oral used donor contributions to maintain a membership at a country club, purchase a new car every six months, and wear $5,000 Brioni suits. He also had some tidbits on Richard Roberts and his antics as a would-be director and fundraiser.

Not long after that book was released, Sholes was attacked and savagely beaten - but not robbed - in a Tulsa parking lot by a couple of unidentified attackers who are believed to be supporters of Oral Roberts. Sholes needed plastic surgery in order to repair his face, and last I heard, he'd rather not talk about his experiences with Oral Roberts anymore.
