WP/NYT: Polish ambass'r 'lightly wounded': Polish paper/Newsday: 'Fights for life, artificial coma'
Again, the **papers of record** in our country lie to us.

Washington Post, October 4, 2007

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Poland's ambassador to Iraq was lightly wounded in a triple bomb attack on his diplomatic convoy in central Baghdad on Wednesday which killed a Polish bodyguard and an Iraqi passer-by, officials said......
"It was an assassination attempt. Our three cars drove onto mines," said a foreign ministry spokesman in Warsaw.
"A few people are wounded. Our ambassador, Gen. Edward Pietrzyk scrambled out (of the wreckage) on his own." .....

NY Times, October 4, 2007

.....The ambassador, Gen. Edward Pietrzyk, survived with burns to his head and hand, said Polish officials and witnesses at the scene of the attack. ..... Robert Szaniawski, a spokesman for the Polish Foreign Ministry, said the ambassador was in stable condition. The Associated Press quoted the Polish deputy ambassador, Waldemar Figaj, as saying General Pietrzyk was “going to be fine” after treatment for burns covering 20 percent of his body and would return to Poland later Wednesday.

Yahoo, October 3, 2007

A daring ambush of bombs and gunfire left Poland's ambassador pinned down in a burning vehicle Wednesday before being pulled to safety and airlifted in a rescue mission by the embattled security firm Blackwater USA. At least three people were killed, including a Polish bodyguard. .....
(Gen. Edward) Pietrzyk, who was commander of ground forces in Poland before taking the ambassador post in April, suffered minor burns over 20 percent of his body, including his head and right arm and leg, said Polish Charge d'Affaires Waldemar Figaj.

.....Pietrzyk was treated at the U.S. military hospital in the fortified Green Zone and later flown to Warsaw.

"He is going to be fine," Figaj said. "He is stable, but he needs rest."

MEANWHILE:

Polish ambassador wounded in Iraq fights for life, October 5, 2007

Poland’s ambassador to Iraq Edward Pietrzyk, who got injured in an explosion in Baghdad last Wednesday is struggling for life. His state is very serious and prognosis is very cautious,” said Andrzej Krajewski, head of the hospital in Gryfice, northern Poland where the ambassador was transported on Friday night.

“The patient is unable to breathe and was put on respirator. He is suffering from burns of upper airways and some 20 percent of his body’s surface is burnt,” doctor Krajewski informed. .....

Newsday, October 7, 2007

Polish Ambassador Gen. Edward Pietrzyk is being kept in an artificial coma after suffering severe burns in an apparent assassination attempt last week in Baghdad, a doctor said in Poland. Officials initially said his injuries were minor, but his condition is now being described as serious but stable.

We hope for the Ambassador's full recovery.

1. Where's the lie? The intial reports were quoting...
Polish officials, who later said they underestimated his injuries.

Now the Times is supposed to be psychic?

2. That's my take, too
You have to be really careful in assessing burns anywhere on the upper body because they can signal inhaled flame. Even superficial looking external burns can be serious enough if inhalation has occurred to be fatal.

3. Didn't you get the memo? Any and all errors, no matter how small or
innocent, are LIES.

Mistakes no longer exist.

4. If one just read the WP/NYT on the day after the attack, the impression is:
1. He was only 'slightly injured'.

2. He 'scrambled out (of the wreckage) on his own.'.

3. He was "going to be fine" and 'would return to Poland on Wednesday.'

Now, if one read about this attack from this Polish newspaper and Yahoo, one would gather that:

1. He sustained burns to the head (which are, by nature, life-threatening because of the likely potential of internal burns of the upper airway, bronchi and lower respiratory tree.) He also sustained burns over 20% of his body surface.

2. He was pulled from the wreckage and airlifted out.

3. He was already in very serious condition, and not transported to Poland until Friday night, after first being flown to the American hospital in Ramstein, Germany.

Gen. Pietrzyk was transported form the American hospital in Ramstein, western Germany, in a US army’s plane, to the airport near Szczecin, western Poland, and then taken to hospital in Gryfice in an ambulance helicopter.

4. He is now in an induced coma, on a respirator and is fighting for his life.

The incessant shaping, downplaying and lying by omission by our media is what is unacceptable.

Upper Airway burns are sneaky at times

You seem to be fine, and forty eight hours later you are on a respirator

Just an FYI

Hopefully he'll be fine after some time on a respirator...
Damn body, it gets swollen
